** Pony Is Colicing ** Final UPDATE #64

Came in late on this one - it sounds like she is coming out of it. I have always kept an injection or oral doseage of Banamine on hand for cases of colic. It has always (KOW) worked for me - access to fresh water and lots of it in this heat is critical. as well as fly repellent and shade.

Good luck - I am off to teach a couple of lessons but I will check in later with you all.

No, no, it is quite OK to let her lie down at this point as long as she just wants to lie down and rest rather than thrash around!!!!

This as per modern veterinary research.

Good luck, fingers crossed for you,

Pat

Thank you ALL for your thoughts and posts.
Farah seems alot better this morning !!! about 2 inches of water is gone from her water.

She is up and moving around and wanting to know why she hasnt got breakfast yet.
I went to bed a bed about 6:00am and then slept until now, 11:08.

I just let her rest last night. She hasn't rolled in awhile now so thats good.!!
Im off to the feed store for probios.and call the vet and let him know everything is looking better.

Colic, I just hate colic!!! - scares the be-jeepers out of me.

Sounds like you're on the way to recovery! Watch her closely for the next couple of days to make sure she does not relapse. Check her front legs at the hooves - if they are cold you may be still in colic mode.

Just a note here, Never feed your horse when it is colicing. Only when they are past the colic, then only feed your horse light for the first couple of feedings.. at first maybe just a couple of handfuls of hay every couple of hours. And, just because they poop doesn't mean they are over it - you could be seeing poop thats past the problem.

You only need to walk her if she is wanting to throw herself down or thrash/roll. Otherwise you end up with a very tired horse that still is colicing. If she wants to lay down or stand quietly that is OK. Another suggestion is to also worm your horse when they colic, it does help.

Please let us know how she progresses today and tomorrow. Sending well wishes your way

Glad to hear she is feeling better. My thoughts are with you and your pony.

Colic is so scarey and it usually happens in the evening, when its dark and raining, on a weekend when the Vets are on call.

if you feed physillium (sp) every day it will cause problems

not sure why it would..it is a natural fiber husk I believe, that when consumed and mixed with water will just bind the sand and move it along the intestional tract..she is giving metamucil, which is physillium, once a week I think she said,,I would up it to 3 days a week,consecutive..cute pony BTW..

Good News buck-wild!

Great that she's drinking, the last thing you need is a dry gut with a problem.
If you feed her at all - NO GRAIN - just some free choice hay - the softest/least stemmy you have.
And do make sure to call your vet and ask what he/she recommends.
IIWM, I'd probably want to spend the $$ for a farm call just to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

Not to side track, but long ago I was told to feed psyllium every day for a week every month. Every day the sand moves a little, its takes a week to move the sand through the gut and out. Made sense to me anyway. Some folks like to feed it everyday, but once a week wont move the sand out.
