We recently adopted a wonderful 10 yr old Shih Tzu. We loooove her dearly but she is an avid connoisseur of poop! She absolutely will not listen whilst she is munching on this delicacy either - ewwwwww! Short of picking up the poo every single second, is anyone aware of anything we could do to deter this? I think I recall something you can feed them that makes their poo taste awful to them???

Awful subject I know, but we're all so grossed out. Well, honestly the kids think it's funny but DH and I certainly don't.

Was hoping with so many knowledgeable people on BYC we might find some helpful info.

Thanks!

Kathy

Pineapple. Feed her a few pieces a day.

It'll stop her.

It CAN'T be that simple! Really??? I was expecting something like an extremely expensive store-bought remedy or something

Pineapple I can definitely do!!! This dog will eat anything.

Thank you CF!

There is a powder you can get from your vet called Forbid, you add it to her food. You can also add dry oatmeal to her food. Some dogs will continue to do it no matter what though. It does also help to keep as much cleaned up as possible. Sorry its a horrible habit. Good luck!

It is that simple

And until you get it in her system, try a couple of drops of hotsauce or pinches of cayenne on any poo piles in the area. That is also a great deterrent

Hope it works out for ya!

Some dogs can be broken from this disgusting habit but many can't. It is more common with females than males. It is an innate primodial method that many animal affect to keep predators from discovering their young. Granny has a Bichon that weighs about 8 pounds yet produces about 3 times the fecal matter of my 17 pound JRT. If we don't watch her continually she will eat her feces. Of course given the amount of dog crap I have to clean up I don't know why I even consider breaking her.

Omgosh Sam, you are FUNNY! It's amazing how even on the best of food they still poo so much.

We have the 120 pound American Bulldog whose piles are easy to find but nooooo, she'll search diligently for her own piles to munch on! Yuck! It's a good thing she's not a licky-kissy pooch

Ive read is it goes back to before their domesticated times (cant think of the word, primal?) there was a lot of nutrients still left in the poo so they would eat it..
Maybe she is low on something..

What kind of food are you feeding?
