Please help, we have 5 chickens at school out of 64 that are just over a week old and have just developed spraddle leg, as well as these lumps on the ends of their toes (picture below) we think the cause of the spraddle leg may be the lumpy stuff on their toes but we are no sure the substance is hard and almost imposible to get off without making the chickens draw blood please help !

That is dried poop. The bedding has to be kept much cleaner than that. The poop is hard and smooth which doesn't allow the chick any traction which is causing the splayed legs. Splayed legs chicks eventually die. You need to hold each toe as close to the nail as possible and pinch the dried poo to try and remove it. I recommend placing the effected chicks in very warm water deep enough to cover their feet. Let them walk around in the water for at least 15-20 minutes and then try to remove the poop from each toe using a dry cloth. It may require more than one soaking. The floor of the coop/enclosure HAS to be kept clean and dry.

Thankyou
Our agriculture teacher suggested that as well ,
we removed the poo and and two of them still struggled with standing ,
we had to humanly euthenizre one and we used a technique with bandaids for the other ,
the other one has fully recovered pretty much over night and all of them are doing realy well ,

Thank you so much for your help
