Poor things! Advice for debeaked pullets I got today

There always people that will excuse themselves of their mismanagement and cruelty of animals, while trying to maximize their profits. It often is a case of either ignorance or greed.

From what I've read it is painful. Unlike hooves the beaks are cut with a machine with a hot blade to cauterize it otherwise the bird could bleed to death. I read some where on the web that it is belived to cause sensitivity/pain to some birds for life. I pray that isn't true. I know that if I cut my nails too short it hurts - how much more so for a beak??! !

I am comforted by the BYCers that have offered advice regarding their experience keeping debeaked birds. There is hope after all

Yeah, I'D like to know if they grow back, too.
You know, with our American creativity, you'd think that people could come up with other solutions. FOR EXAMPLE, I have figured out that to introduce a NEW bird to an established flock, you can create a new flock. You put a low ranking hen in with the new bird, let them sort it out, then introduce the rest of the flock one at a time. This way, they have time to sort it out without beating the heck out of the newcomer. I had to introduce "Fanny", who was a year older to my pullets, and that's how I did it, WITHOUT messing with cutting beaks or claws.

My first 2 chickens were debeaked. I got them that way from a hatchery as "started pullets". I didn't know they would come that way. They were very nice birds and I really loved them. This is Ruby, she had a "shovel beak":

This is Pearl, her beak was clipped to an even shape:

I had them for over 3 years before they passed away. The only thing I did different for them was to chop up their grapes and other large pieces so they could get their fair share without having to fight for it.

And NO, their beaks don't grow back, they stay that way for the rest of their lives.

It is horrible. I would'nt ever get debeaked chickens on purpose, I wouldn't want to promote the debeaking. However, if one happened to need a home and landed in my yard.........well......you know I'll take care of her!
