Hello. Please may I ask for some help? We rescued 12 ex commercial hens in May. They all settled in well and feathered up nicely. We do not have any other hens.
After about 8 weeks we noticed one girl became a little withdrawn and not mixing with the others. Sadly she died a few days later. Another month later and we lost another, exactly the same way.
We now have a 3rd girl showing the same symptoms. I have studied her very closely. She is withdrawn, eyes closed much of the time. Her comb has dark blackish areas. She is totally off her food. She is also producing very watery yellow poo.
Is there anything I can do to help this poor girl, and do you think there is something infecting the whole flock?
Thank for any help you can give.

When was the last time she laid an egg?
How old is she?
Feel her abdomen for any bloat/swelling or feeling of fluid. She may be suffering from a reproductive/internal laying disorder like Egg Yolk Peritonitis, Ascites, cancer or tumors - some symptoms include lethargy, going off feed, sometimes swelling or fluid in the abdomen from egg or egg masses, yellow droppings that look like egg, lameness and difficulty breathing.

Check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight and keep her hydrated. It would be a good idea to have a fecal float to rule out worms or coccidiosis overload.

Thanks for your reply. She is about 2 years old. I have no idea when she last laid an egg sadly.
I can feel no swelling of her abdomen but her crop is the size of a golf ball. Is this because there is a problem or just because she is not eating? The others all have full crops (its evening now so they are roosting)

Check her crop first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks to see if it has emptied (flat).
Crop issues can be a symptom of an underlying condition like worms, coccidiosis or internal laying/reproductive disorders - essentially there is inflammation/swelling or something slowing/blocking the processing of foods. http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/impacted-slow-and-sour-crops-prevention-and-treatments

It's very hard to know what is causing a decline sometimes - so if you lose her, having a necropsy performed or if you can do it yourself, you may be able to determine the cause.
