Poorly Feathered Quail Chick

The quail chicks have made three wks old now, the one thats developed slower is now called Curly. Hes looking better for the nutridrench treatment and enrichment. His siblings are now feathered enough of their adult feathers to be sexed by appearence, if the speckled chest vs red chest is to be believed with this line, which im unsure of.

Do you think that one may be a mixed breed? I have seen light colored quail on The FB La. for sale pages. Just a thought. Pam

No such thing as a mixed breed coturnix. A coturnix is a coturnix is a coturnix. They have different color phases but theyre all the same bird. The only thing a coturnix can be hybridized with is a chicken and you have to use a syringe to make that happen.

There is a mutation that causes rough feathers but there arent a lot of those out there.

There are different types of quail, here there are several from Murray Mcmurray, not chicken crossed but different breeds the way im sure Ms Pam ment.

And the A&M is a cross bred species of quail developed at the Texan college but there are several colors of Coturnix also.

It may be two diff breeds of quail. Im more concerned that it may have two copies of the reccsive gene that causes the white color, which would make it weaker. The seller was very poor quality not at all like when i bought from you :) and i wouldnt be surprised if its even the result of siblings interbreeding.

:hugs i know youve never had quail, thank you so much for coming here, i really appreciate your constant support so much!

Not to be rude but you really don't understand what you are talking about. "Texas A&Ms" are just jumbo white coturnix. Nothing more. There are different color phases of coturnix but they are not in any way different breeds. Pharaoh, golden, tibetan, rosetta, silver, etc are all just different colors of coturnix. You can't "cross breed" something if it's the exact same species.

The link you gave is for chukar partridge and bobwhite quail. Only one of those is a quail although it's not from the same scientific family as coturnix. Coturnix can only hybridize with chickens, they cannot hybridize with other species of quail, including bobwhites, valleys, gambels, blue scaled, chinese, rain, harlequin or any of the other many species of quail.

I already have the incubator ;)
Dying to hatch something anyway, so I think I'll find some eggs.
Thanks a bunch! I figured that was the way to go, but appreciate the confirmation

Always want to help Turk . Yes that is what I was thinking but have no experience with quail. So some one offered me some quail eggs from Delaware . I know his stock is well cared for. If you want some I'll see if the offer still stands if you want to hatch more. Pam

What a fantastic offer! Thank you! Your too kind!! Ive been debating with myself over this for days now and i think im going to have to turn you down at this point. So far i havent had to attempt any shipped eggs, im very lucky to have an exccelent breeder in my home town whos just waiting for my order ;) Im sort of scared of shipped too, because im only Just learning how to hatch. You know that hatching shipped is another ball game altogther. I will try more coturnix because i need another line, but for now, i know a man in Denham that has good stock.

Annnnnd i just got some Button Quail that im gonna toy with :) since im gna have hubby build quail quarters anyway  :lau
