You did your best with her which is a lot more than her owners bothered with. At her age she may have had internal problems you couldn't foresee. I'm

that they just took off and made her YOUR responsibility instead of theirs. You're the type of person we love to have on BYC, wish we could clone you.

At least I know I did my best although I still feel sad about it. Sometimes people don't think through how much time and attention animals may need before they book numerous trips away. It's a potentially difficult situation as the chickens belong to my mother in law!
