Help! I have a about 1 year old rooster who has been declining for about a week. He roosts with 2 other rooster who seem perfectly normal. At first I thought it was a possible injury and when he was not recovering, I brought him in doors to recover in a more peaceful atmosphere. He is still not improving and doesn’t do much more than just stand in one spot. He is eating and drinking. Today, one of his eyes is shut and he is not opening it. The other eye does not look well. Any advice?

A neighbor just checked him for me, he definitely has a digestive issue. His crop not being emptied?

How is he today?
Is he pooping? What does that look like?

If his crop has not emptied overnight before he eats/drinks, then likely that is at least part of the reason why he is not feeling well.

Do make water available to him, but you need to try to get the crop to empty/moving.
Feel his crop - is it hard, soft, squishy, doughy, does his breath smell sour? The first thing I would try is keeping him hydrated and offer some coconut oil. I put a small amount of oil in the fridge/freezer to harden it a little, then break it up into bite size pieces. My chickens will eat this willingly, see if he will eat the oil. Massage the crop really well 3-4times a day to see if you can get what ever is in there broken up, sometimes there may be a little air in there too. I usually give oil a couple of times the first day. He needs to stay hydrated.

Here's a very good article that can help you determine what type of crop problem he may have going on - let us know how he is an what you find - we can help you from there

Sorry to reply so late. Thank you so much for the advice. It was definitely something wrong with his crop. I wasn’t sure exactly what I was feeling, but when I checked it in the morning it was not emptying. I kept him hydrated and tried the cocunot oil. And the neighbor gave some antibiotics I tried too. I believe if I had realized he was sick sooner, it would have been helpful, but he was already weak by the time I intervened - now I know what to look for so I am more assertive about checking my other roosters to hopeful identify problems sooner. I hate learning at his expense though.
