For everyone out there reading this, you've got to quarantine chicks and chicks from hatching eggs! Remember the McMurray debacle a couple years ago???
You don't know where that chick box has been sitting that your chicks come in either..... there are things that can hitch a ride on them too.
MG can pass through the egg, though it is rare, wouldn't you rather be safe?

Chicks were quarantined. They were kept in the house....until my husband thought it was a brilliant idea to dump their pine shavings in the backyard....
Took a handful of birds to the avian specialist today. Throat swabs and blood tests have been done and results will hopefully be in by Friday.
It will be a relief to see what I am dealing with. The thought of having to cull a whole flock of birds sickens me.
On the bright side, the vet says that even my sickest bird is still very healthy. No signs of nasal or sinus draining, clear throat and lungs despite the rattling breathing sounds. He agreed with the Tylan 50 0.5cc injection in the breast for 5 days. We'll also be starting the Denagard when it arrives.
The 3 wk old "carrier monkey" chicks are doing as well as can be expected for their size. They seem to be showing signs of improvement but I am guarded.
I am still waiting for the vet to call me with the lab results.
However, I have spoke to 2 other people within a 50 mile radius of me who have closed flocks and BOTH of them are going through the same thing that I am. They've never been to my house and I have never been to theirs. We use different feed stores and live in different cities. Can this be a coincidence??
Throat swabs were clean. No signs of virus, bacteria or infection.
Bloodwork is perfect. No antibodies to MS or MG.
Vet says it is most likely a pollen in the air that is causing allergic reactions. OMG what a scare. We've had a very cold, rainy spring until a few weeks ago so not sure if this is the reason there is more pollen in the air??
Hopefully this thread will help those in a similar position years from now. With so many people that cull based on any respiratory symptoms they would have culled a whole flock of perfectly healthy birds that just happened to have an allergic reaction to something in the air.
