Possibility of my son attending school with a murderer

I went to High School with a kid who hit and killed a class mate of ours while driving drunk...he got off scott-free on it...but it really wasnt the best thing for any of us that he still be in the school...we were dissillusioned with local law enforcement, afraid to talk to him or accept him into our groups, and he was treated very badly so all around it would have been a better judgement to have said he couldnt come back to school. I think that little 8yr old needs some psychiatric help and maybe to be in a home for a while to be rehabilitated or diagnosed.

It looks like abuse case to me. Of course far be it for me to say anything about the boys current mental status, but I would wager that he's unlikely to re-offend unless provoked.

You mentioned to the point where he had to re-load the rifle number of times to keep shooting. That shows how deeply he had to be hurt. I mean 1000 spankings. That's 1 a day for 3 years. That's a lot of provocation!

I don't know what to suggest. Part of me wants to say he should be re-integrated (and obviously officials think so too), but another part suggests to be very watchful of his behavior.

I don't think it should drive you to home-school your children, but again, I am not in your shoes.

I felt sorry for him as well when the story first broke. They released a video of him being questioned and the sound of his little voice just broke my heart. Unfortunately, Saint Johns is an extremely small, rural town. The judge immediately put out a gag order regarding any type of abuse and the townspeople seemed to have closed ranks. Even if there was abuse, given the fact that this was premeditated, can this child come back from this and be a normal, productive member of society? What if he perceives a threat from another child or adult? Will he then react in same?

Sounds like a sociopath.

I work at a school in Charlotte, NC that is full of them. Saw on the news that one of my students was arrested AGAIN for the same thing. Breaking and entering, high speed chase, stolen car, blah, blah, blah. The system is broken. I've had students as young as 1st grade. They brought loaded weapons to school.

I want to win the lottery so I can buy land in the middle of nowhere and become a hermit!!

This case was just on the news last year when it happened... then they just stopped covering it. They never released any details, and because of the plea-bargain process, any reports of molestation and abuse were then kept "under wraps".

I would INSIST that the school obtain the psichiatric report done by the courts on this boy. By Law, the school can not release info-- but THEY are also responsible for the safety of the other students.

As an ex-counselor- it sounded from day 1 that this boy was being abused or molested by BOTH men... or the "boarder" who was "laying on the couch" when shot wouldn't have been shot as well.

something VERY hinky with the father and the living situation...

unless a child is a TRUE sociopath-- these type of things do NOT happen without a long-term issue behind it...

And if the child WAS a sociopath, there would be OTHER precursors to the murder... animal abuse and killings, hurting other kids, arson, ritualistic destruction etc... Someone would have reported his behavior LONG before this happened!

AND WHY is the MOTHER not being more VOCAL!??

pips&peeps :

It apparently was not self defense and when a child that young could kill someone, there is definately something very wrong with him.

Those are the only details I need to know. I would not want him around my kids. Sorry.

He has already gotten away with two murders, what's to say he wouldn't do it again once he gets into the turmoil of junior high or high school.

I agree with this completely. Too many kids (and adults for that matter) think because they are minors they can get away with whatever they want to while a minor, go to juvinile hall and when they turn 21 - their records are expunged - and they get to walk at 21 free of whatever they did. Nope - just because they're a child doesnt mean they dont have evil thoughts and arent above killing anyone.

Look at that boy that just shot and killed his fathers pregnant fiance because "he didnt like that he was going to have a brother/sister" and the attention wasnt on him.

Uhm..yeah... nope - I'd be heading up a parent committee and going to the school board with the reasons this child should not be attending school. Abuse or no abuse - why did this kid kill the border then? He didnt abuse the kid... if the kid was abused at all. Least we forget Columbine and other incidents of this nature. Too fresh for my memory....

Looking on the flip side.....is this even a good idea for the boy? All his schoolmates know what he did. And if there is talk of abuse the schoolmates have heard it......

I do feel for that young boy, something caused him to snap. BUT, if that is the case, he could snap again. Especially since the consequences weren't so bad this time. It happened in November and they already want him back in school? That is way too soon to know what kind of issues he does have and for anyone to say that it won't happen again. I would be right beside you fighting it all the way!
