Possible brooder?

Would a wire dog crate with the plastic pan work for a chic brooder? I have several of them in storage and using 1 or 2 as brooders would free up money to buy other things that will be needed.

Depends on how large the crate is and how many chicks you're talking about. Figure chicks need at LEAST 1 square foot of space each. There are lots of cheap/free options out there. I got a free pumpkin box from my grocery store.

I want to say the 4 largest are 36"L x 24"W, they've been in storage for the last 3 years so I could be wrong.

I'm planning on starting with 15 - 20 chics.

I also have an old Petmate 48"L x 32"W and a size adjustable rabbit pen that could be used.

36x24 would probably work for about 2 weeks then you'll need something bigger.
