possible cocci

Hi,

My chicks (41 of them!) had coccidiosis at 5 or 6 weeks old. Only 1 looked very sick, so I separated her, kept her under a heat lamp and fed her extra polyvisol and scrambled eggs. In the beginning we were not giving medicated feed, but we switched to medicated, and gave them Corid in the water. I had trouble finding Corid initially. It is also called Amprolium, and Corid is the brand name marketed for Cattle, I believe. Sulmet will also help with coccidiosis. They are now 12 weeks and still on medicated feed, and are healthy.

I really thought we were going to lose the sick chick, but she recovered. I named her Laila, and she is the friendliest chicken in the group. She loves to sit on my shoulder.

Our chicks were vaccinated so we didn't think they would get coccidiosis. We started seeing lots of blood in their poop, but all seemed healthy (with the exception of Laila). I brought a poop sample to the vet and she said that there were oodles of cocci eggs in the poop.

Good luck with your little chick. I doubt you are in NJ, but if you are I got Corid at Brodhecker Farm in Newton. Local Agways don't seem to carry it.

For me, Corid works the best, but I have used Sulmet in a pinch. I also add powdered milk to their feed to help coat their stomachs as the medication is hard on them.

I am going to see if I can find some Amprolium/Corid,

I am pretty sure that is what this chick has, but, if it isn't, will Corid have ill effects on the chick, if it doesn't have cocci?

okay, all I could find was the sulfamethazine.

I am treating one 6 week old chick. what is a good measurement amount to use. ratio to water. don't need to make much, as is for one bird.

and how much do they need to drink for it to be worthwhile?

How many chickens do you have? I don't remember if your bird is laying yet, but if she is don't eat the eggs while she is being treated. It is possible that multiple chickens have cocci, even though one is showing symptoms. I haven't used Sulmet, only Corid, but I think I would treat all just to be on the safe side. I hope that you get a response from someone with more experience than me. I have only dealt with this once.

I found the following posts that describe dosing:

well, I hope this stuff does the trick. I could not find Corid, so the sulfamethazine it is. I have read that this worked wonders for alot of people, and have read that this is tough on the insides and best on adult birds. I read many different things. I just want it to work.

I used 4ml of the liquid to .5 litres of water.

I will keep it updated for sure.

well, I'm happy to report, my baby has made an amazing recovery thus far. Right now it's in a fairly deep brooder pen. This baby is almost 7 weeks old, so not that big. I lifted the wire off to put a dust bathe box in and that baby flew right out of that pen. Lucky for me, my reflexes are still good and caught it right away. Luckily it had landed in a cluttery area and had no where to go in a hurry. whew.

it's feeling much better obviously. I am very pleased, as well, I think I may have lucked out, I think it's a pullet to boot. fingers crossed.
