I noticed my rooster rusty sitting alone on the roost last Wednesday, his eyes were swollen..with the left one swollen completely shut and bulging out. Both had gunk wearing from them. He was also breathing through his mouth. I immediately brought him inside. I finally found a vet on thursday that would see a chicken because I knew this was beyond fixing myself, and he wasnt eating or drinking much at all. She give him a round of baytril injections for a week and told me to come back in a week with him. Ive been cleaning his eyes every day and applying terramycin. The other eye isnt swollen at all anymore only weaping a little. But the one that was badly swollen, has only progressively gotten worse. Underneath where his eye is towards his beak, theres a white place where it almost looks like maybe pus (bc the smell is absolutely putrid) could be surfacing trying to break through. I took a look in his mouth also since hes been breathing with it open, and where im guessing his sinus cavity meets his mouth, there was a large yellowish chunk of stuff clogging the entire area. Im assuming infection. I got some q tips and tried to remove it, and I got it loosened up but stopped bc i didnt want to stress him out too much or hurt him. Im not sure what to do, my gut is telling me I need to Lance the place on his eye or try to get the pus out somehow..because its hot to the touch and hes struggling. Im scared its going to kill him if I dont. But im also scared to get something sharp close to his eye bc of the way he fights when you try to touch it. Any suggestions would be great. Im going to try when my husband gets home to try and get the stuff out of his mouth again because hes struggling to breathe at this point. I feel like also if I unclog that, maybe some of the infection from the eye will possibly come out as well? Any thoughts? I just dont wanna lose my sweet boy! ** Also I have made another vet appt for tomorrow just in case I cant get it out myself, but Im not sure how much more it can wait before its too late.
