Well, one vote that Granny H will get from me is "the most posts to a single thread" (anyone want to guess which thread???? Oh yeah, this one... I may be mistaken, but more than 50% of the 1500+ and counting posts are from Granny

). Not that I'm going to sit there and count all of Grannys' responses, but this thread has more replies than most sticky threads. I followed it for some time to see if it was a Guinea or not, and the suspense was KILLING me.

I thought you guys would like some pictures! They're not very recent, and none of them are of Pip, but I thought I would share anyway.

This is one is of that sweet Jersey Giant pullet that broke her leg (again). Her name's Gwen. She looks more like a crow than a chicken at this age! The rabbit's name is Joey, and he lives with the chickens. They get along great.

This is my baby, The Colonel. He's a bantam Cochin, and about three months old in this picture. Now he's almost two years old. I definitely need another picture of him! Don't tell the others, but he's my favorite.

He was among the first group of chickens I got. This picture was taken before I knew cedar shavings were a no-no for bedding. I promise I don't use it anymore!

These two gals were the very first! Blanche and Sophia, the Golden (comet) Girls! Sadly, Sophia is no longer with us, due to being egg bound. Blanche is still going strong and laying almost every day. She's very sassy, and is most definitely top hen.

This is Helen. Poor thing is blind in one eye. We rescued her at a poultry swap over the summer. Her owner was the sweetest little girl, and no one was interested in a blind hen. We were her only hope, since the little girl's dad said he was going to eat her if no one took
her! She's so sweet and curious. She tilts her head at everything she wants to look at. Luckily for us, a blind hen still lays eggs.

This is The Colonel's mama, Cocoa Puff, the day we brought them home! Clearly, they aren't blood relatives. She brooded The Colonel, as well as his two brothers, Cacciatore and Crispy, and his sister Soufflé. The Colonel's brothers and sister are all frizzled. The gene for it seems to have skipped over him. Cocoa Puff had a biological daughter of her own, Creme Puff, but we lost her to predation about a year ago.

As for the bird that keeps breaking her leg...could be a calcium problem. Hens take about 75% of calcium from their bones to put a shell on an egg. The rest of the calcium comes from their diet. And if she is having trouble absorbing calcium, her bones maybe taking the brunt of the calcium defiency. So you might want to find a supplement that you might give her only, seeing that she no doubt needs more calcium than the other birds.

Nice pics!

Yeah, she's been on an eggshell meal mix for about a week now. I think the problem with her is that she just keeps getting into trouble. The last time it was because her leg slid down between two posts on the fence and got stuck. That was just a sprain. I found her last week hanging upside down because her leg fell through the bars of an old dog crate that was in the garage. I have no idea how she got in there! She's sneaky. Unfortunately for her, she got caught by the same leg that she sprained earlier. I think all that stress was enough to make it break.

She's doing a lot better, they heal fast! The swelling is nonexistent at this point and she's able to hobble around now.

Yeah, they do get into trouble a lot. I am constantly blocking the chickens out of places I know they will hurt themselves. And even the tiniest thing...something or someplace you swear they will never find. They find it and something goes bad. LOL

I am glad she is handling all her injures well. :)

morn. all, not typing good, cut my finger in the worst place. stuck my finger in some wet chicken poop and swiped it off on my hardware cloth. ouch!!!!!!!!!!!
