Possible Necrotic Foot ? (GRAPHIC PHOTO!) RIP, Vada

Thank you, Kate. I hope maybe it just bled into the foot since it was wrapped, but I'm not optimistic. I know that pooled, coagulated blood smells bad, so all I can do is hope that it's not gangrene and somehow, it will heal, even if she loses part of her toes or pad.

You give me too much credit. DH is upset because he thinks he did this to her, but he is scrupulous about disinfecting everything and careful not to cross contaminate anything when we work on bumblefoot. Good heavens, we couldn't leave that staph infection untreated, which would have killed her anyway as bad as it was. So, I'm trying to tell him that it's just one of those things, that he didn't cause it. I've never had anything like this happen, so maybe it's just something to do with Vada's recuperative powers or maybe it was already going systemic.

Pictures so you can see what I mean. They are awful, but thank goodness you don't have Smell-o-Vision. It's bad. Here they are, very graphic!!!! Is it gangrene?

You can see the skin peeling off the middle toe underneath and the pad is very gray now.

Oh! Poor girl!

It sounds like you have received some good, sound advice as to what to do for her. I feel compelled to warn you, however, that if it is any type of staph, you and Tom both need to take extra care to not contaminate yourselves with it. Where gloves at all times when treating her and be sure to wash, wash, wash! I'm certain you already know this, but wanted to give the warning still the same.

it doesn't look it has the streaking of gangrene but the smell points to infection of some sort. Have you tried draining a spot on the top of the toe where it looks almost like a bubble right above the toe nail to see if it drains freely or if that dark coloring is actually the tissue itself?

Yes, we try to be careful, thank you, Stacey. Could be maybe that the staph was already spreading up her leg and this just encouraged it somehow, but darned if I know why this happened. We've treated some bad bumblefoot infections and never had a reaction like this one. She wasn't even limping or noticably swollen. There is nothing coming out of the foot at all, Kate, nothing to lance at all. I think that's a raised scale showing in the pictures.

Cyn, with all the different colors of blue and such, it does look like old blood pooled in the foot (kinda like a bruise). You can make your own Granulex by mixing Iodine and sugar, that's all it is. I'm a nurse, so I know that for a fact. The sugar helps debride the wound while the iodine disinfects it. If you could try that, the Silver cream, and keep it wrapped, it may heal on its own. A good, strong systemic antibiotic of course is crucial so she doesn't get a bone infection from this. Keep us updated, and good luck!!

Thank you, Mandy!! I'll tell my husband. We want to save poor Vada so much, but if it turns out to be an unsalvagable situation, we'll have to think of what's best for her. I very much appreciate your input, and all the other suggestions, too.
