Possible reoccurring botulism or something else

Hello, I have kept chickens for 5 years after getting some xbats, we were down to 1 last year and decided to get some nice bantams and ducks, we now have 13 hens and 10 ducks, 3 crested white, 3 crested silver apple yard and 4 black east indies.

We purchased crested in August by September one of the crested was not easting and just walking around with his head stuck in as if hed forgot to move it out when getting up. Anyway I read about botulism and thought maybe he drank from the old pool they had before I built their pond, so I emptied it and tube fed him pea protein for a week. He seemed to recover, started washing himself in the pond and eating again.
Phew, but then about 3 weeks later it happened again, so I thought maybe he got it from rummaging in the earth leaves etc, tube fed again for around a week and he perked up, but again he regressed a few weeks or month later, this has happened 4 times, but this time hes not recovering, I took him to the vets, hes had bloods and xrays and all seems fine, hes been given metacam and a high energy recovery formula to tube feed 3x a day, so I've bought him in the house and made a pen in a spare room, it has been approx 3 weeks of tube feeding now and he just cant seem to move his neck, and when he does you can see it's not working properly, he tried to groom himself but just doesnt have the energy and can lose his balance, not how you see a healthy duck do.

The vet has said we can try some antibiotics before going with further treatment, I'm just lost and nobody can help with ideas.
Ofc being a duck and being prob 20 weeks when purchased he hated being handled and just sses me of a monster grabbing him and stuffing a tube down him, hes scared and just doesnt understand up trying to help. I will post some vids if possible.

Could he have a reoccurring case of wry neck? I think it’s caused by a vitamin E deficiency, and it normally affects young chicks/ducklings but can affect adults as well. Sorry your duck isn’t doing well :hugs I hope you get this cleared up

Hi there, welcome to BYC! :frow

What do you feed on a regular basis?

It sounds much more like nutrient deficit as botulism IS deadly fast (I think).

Not eating can also be a symptom of crop dysfunction (like impacted)... which could cause a nutrient deficit.

Ducks have a higher thiamine requirement than chickens do and therefore chicken feed may not be sufficient, though it usually effects legs. Also please note that ducks are omnivores and require some animal based amino acids... feeding pea protein might not do the trick...

Start by giving human B complex crushed up in a little scrambled egg.. which is often very palatable and easy to digest.

What do dropping look like?

In fact, the lack of neck movement may not even be painful requiring metacam... Is there any swelling or heat indicating am infection or injury? Some birds who suffer fro wry neck will NEVER fully recover use of their neck but can still live contently.

If there is a need a for antibiotics (which I doubt)... the vet should be able to find out if gram positive or negative bacteria and maybe treat more appropriately??

Not sure if this link will help, but it might at least clue you in on IDEAS of what to look for... I have very little experience with ducks and didn't realize that torticollis (wry neck) is different than "limp" neck for them... Under the DUCK tab is a symptom checker tool...

Are you able to post any photos of him or upload a video to youtube or vimeo and link here?

What is this "high energy" recovery formula? Is the bet an avian vet by chance?

:fl

Hello, at first they were fed with layers pellets as the ducks and chickens free range, everyone said that was ok to feed that, even the duck breeder i bought them off! After the second bout of illness i read it could be from lack of a certain vitamin so swapped to duck pellets, i have 9 other ducks and they are all well. The sick food is for birds called Emeraid IC.

Have you done much research on the crested breed?
No i assumed they were like any other duck, i have read that they have a low mortality rate in hatching, but i didn't get them for breeding nor eggs as i am vegan. Is ther anything about them genetically that makes them more prone to illness?

Ah, no, they are way more prone to neurological problems.
