Hi everyone. Thanks for reading this. One of my hens had a possible bacterial or some kind of vent infection in my 3 yr old hen. For 2 days I have been cleaning her with soap and water and applying antibiotic cream to infected, smelly, yellowish drainage. Today she is very alert, eating and drinking very good and no more redness or drainage noted. But I have 2 concerns. I have seen clear drainage when I put her down now but no poop. And another of my hens keeps coming over to this hen and chases her to peck her in the rear. I have kept her separated in a crate with the others but today I let her out to walk around.
Any help would be appreciated.

Can you post any pictures of your hen's cleaned-up vent area? It would be good to find out if she is perhaps an internal layer who has been having eggs break inside, or who might be passing cooked egg material, which is also common. Some hens can get damaged vents from being vent pecked by other, from having a prolapse in the past, or from passing too large of eggs. Another problem could be a fungal or bacterial infection in the GI tract that might be causing the drainage. That condition is called vent gleet, and includes a raw or excoriated vent area with red skin and white patches. Is she presently laying eggs or has she had any past problems with shell-less or thin shelled eggs?

I will try to take a pic. Kind of hard when you are alone but I will give it my best shot. Surrounding skin is healthy pink and no odor is present. I don't know if she is laying eggs. At this time production is down with it being dark so early and so late. Funny you should wonder if it was a possible previous prolapse uterus. That is what came to my mind this morning. All tissue is pink. No white patches.

I have attached 2 photos. The tissue looks white on the bottom but it is pink. All tissue is pink. The darker area is from the blue kote. I did not see any clear drainage today. No odor. Out of 11 hens, only 1 black hen will come in to peck at her behind. I let her out in the coop because she was at the door. Waiting to come out. She will walk around or run if she has too but she likes to stay in the corner. Gets along with all the other hens. She is eating and drinking. Let me know if you need any more info. Thank you so much.

Does her vent look pooched out like there could be an egg in there? You can always check inside an inch or two with one finger, where it should feel soft normally--use a disposable glove. The upper part looks red like they have been pecking at it. I would check around and under the vent for lice which are tiny and fast moving. I would continue the BluKote every day, since it seems to help the pecking.

The vent does look pooched out. I think the color has greatly improved. I stopped the blukote because I thought that was why the 1st chicken attacked her. She has been in a crate for 3 days. Trying to decide if she would be ok if left out.
