As I described in my intro thread, e
verything was going fine and easy until I heard a sneezing noise two days ago. I am incredibly perceptive and I always pay close attention to my babies and as soon as I heard it (which is as soon as it started happening), I watched to see what chick it was and immediately became worried. Turns out, it was the bigger Cornish Rock, Ivy (from Tractor Supply :/). She was making an occasional sneezy noise and had a rattly throat when I picked her up, almost like rocks grinding. And now she's been occasionally sitting with her mouth open. Not all the time, just sometimes.

See this video for the noise (you may have to turn the volume up, and all I am doing is holding her and rubbing her a little in the video):

We took her to the farm (but kept her well away from the barn with their chicks) and he said she has CRD and we caught it early. Of course, I'm completely heartbroken. We got antibiotics and have been treating it.

But now I'm wondering if this really is CRD? Ivy is not showing any other signs, though all of my chicks, even the vaccinated ones from the farm sound stuffy. The other Cornish Rock, Iris, and one of the Golden Comets is making the grinding rock noise too...

I had maybe thought it was the pine bedding for a while because it started soon after I got it... The one we got was a bit loose, kind of like sawdust, and as soon as we changed from shredded paper to that, all the chicks picked at it and stuff, and the sneezy stuff happened about the day after we put the new bedding in (I should mention that the container we have them in is a pretty tall plastic container- for like storage, with no lid. that's pretty much the only ventilation spot). We have changed it back to the shredded paper now, and the chickies are on antibiotics (in their water), but... I'm not so sure.

But as of right now, there has been no improvement, and Ivy sounds worse. Some of the Golden Comets are starting to make the grinding noise too. I'm going to see if we can get the chickies tested to see if they really have CRD but if it's an outrageous amount, we'll probably have to cull them. It'd be too dangerous to have a closed flock, I have friends with chickens too and I don't want to get theirs sick too... I don't want to have to cull them, I love these chickies with all my heart. But I don't want to risk future flocks as well.

Ugh. I don't know. Please help :(

its very difficult to tell from video but CRD symptoms are as follows : drop in feed, slow growth, droopiness coughing, sneezing, rattling, gurgling, swollen face, nasal discharge, ruffled feathers, frothy eyes, squeaky chirp, loss of appetite, weight loss, and yellowish droppings..spreads very slowly. cause is Mycoplasma bacteria contagious .birds remian carriers. treatment is tylosin TYLAN, or gallimycine. id use tylan 50. small bird dose is 1/4 cc once daily at 5 days. im reading from my health book and it says pervention to vaccinate after outbreak.. hope this information was helpful. sorry i couldnt tell much from video. but these are the symptoms.. see what you think... Good luck to you!!

Thank you! They have been eating fine from what I have seen... the Cornish Rocks definitely have slow growth- my dad's employee has two of them and they are way bigger from what he says. Only the non-vaccinated chicks are showing any signs at all (they're only vaccinated by Mareks I believe, seeing as they were from Tractor Supply)- which is only the grinding-rocks noise, sneezing, possibly slightly wet nose (maybe, I am not entirely sure if she had been drinking water before hand), and Ivy, the one in this clip, sometimes sits with her mouth hanging open. There are no frothy eyes or swollen face... I've not noticed any yellowish droppings... as for coughing, what does that sound like?

I've been hearing that the ONLY way to be responsible is to kill them or have a closed flock and be really careful- which is hard because I have friends that have chickens :( So does that mean even vaccinated birds are at risk? I am supposed to be getting two silkies in the next two weeks from the same farm I got my four vaccinated chicks from- who are not really showing signs. Everyone sounds a bit nasally though... I don't know, it breaks my heart at the thought of having the kill my entire first flock... but that is sounding like the better option because I don't want to risk all my future flocks....

And they have been getting gallimycine in their water, changed twice a day to keep it fresh (as recommended to us). It doesn't seem to be having any effect though...

I've been looking into "Upper Respiratory Fungal Infections" and my chick's symptoms sound more like that actually?

"Noticeable symptoms include gaping (stretching their neck forward and opening their mouth), coughing, sneezing, sniffling, 'chirping', and gasping for air. Sometimes a bird with no noticeable symptoms can be held to your ear to hear crackling, rattling, and gurgling from inside their lungs when they breathe."
