Possibly infected Rooster Leg

hey guys!

I posted a few days ago that my rooster was injured with a leg tag being caught on a screw. My rooster is about 2.5 months and is a Plymouth Rock.

I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and have been putting neosporin and lightly wrapped it.

Last night it started to form blisters and I popped them. I cleaned them again with hydrogen peroxide, neosporin and wrapped.

Today, I noticed that his leg is warm. I believe it is infected. It’s swollen. I really love this rooster but know if I need to cull him, that’s just part of it. He puts a little weight on it when moving around but mostly lies. He is eating and drinking. He is alert.

Would should I do? I bought Vetericyn and am getting it tomorrow. Any advise would be appreciated.

Time will tell but for the time being, lay off of the hydrogen peroxide. It destroys new cells. Use betadine instead.

Any other suggestions? I’m thinking of calling the vet and seeing if he will prescribe some antibiotics...

The leg is at a funky angle. Do you think he broke it when he was hanging from the leg band? If so, he should be seen by a vet. Good luck with him!

I agree, if you have vet care, that would be best. @Eggcessive mentioned in your other thread it looked broken. I do think she is right.
What does the bottom of the foot look like? When you popped the blisters did anything come out of them?
I too would stop using the peroxide, use betadine or chlorhexidine as suggested in the other thread. Neosporin and Vetericyn are both good to use as well.

So I called our vet and he doesn’t do chickens. He did give me some antibiotics so I’m going to give that a go! I do have a the Texas A&M vet school near me but I would be looking at spending hundreds if not thousands. I can’t find another vet will treat a rooster.

I’m gonna keep trying to help him!!!

Hopefully, it was the peroxide and covering it that caused the blisters. I would use the Vetericyn or some Betadine Iodine on the leg. Did you try to splint the leg? Using vet wrap for splinting with padding underneath and popsicle sticks or other objects to splint, can be removed often to check on circulation and skin underneath. Vet wrap is available at most farm and feed stores, and at Walmart in the first aid aisle as “cohesive bandage.”

The leg looks broken, I think it needs a splint.

The break in the skin might mean it is a compound fracture. The is when the skin is punctured and bacteria can enter the bone. That really does needs splinting and an antibiotic. What did the vet prescribe?
