Possum Head Strike!

Just updating everyone...Butterball has both eyes open today and wandered around a bit. She was much more uppity when I have her water tonight. Her strength is definitely returning!! You can still see how black and blue her right eye is. I think she can see OK, she went in and out of her little house today. Not eating or drinking on her own yet but we are making progress. Thank you again for all of your support and not thinking I was crazy for trying to save her!View attachment 1291208 View attachment 1291210
pshaw chicken people aren't crazy. who told you that?

Aaawww... Butterball! Just reading this thread for the first time. I am hopeful for a full recovery! How is her eating, drinking and pooping?
No eating or drinking on her own yet. She has had such a horrible trauma to her head so we decided not to tube feed her. We are getting fluids in by syringe and she is drinking a lot. She is also pooping a little every day so it looks like things are moving. She just opened two eyes yesterday and is supporting more weight and walking around. It will be a great day when she eats or drinks.

***Update on Butterball*** She is doing great everyone!! We fed her electrolytes by syringe for a week & a half and then added in watered down chick starter for another week & a half. We put her out in a separate coop and after that third week we stopped feeding her by hand and she started to come around slowly. She would be up and walking for small spurts then rest and tuck her head and sleep. It really was a waiting game to see if she would eat anything on her own. A month later and she is almost back to normal. I noticed tonight that both of her eyes finally seem to be focusing. She is scratching, eating and trying to bully the other hens through the fence. We have her a little yard time but started to scrap with the other hens until our rooster broke them up. She was used to being number 1 and she will be again one day, no doubt. We are going to put her back in general population on Friday night! This hen surely wanted to live!!! Thank you so much for your help, great advice and positive energy!!!
