Possum on the Porch

Thanks foxtrapper. You've kind of verified my concerns.

I left the trap and cat food out last night. Nothing. Chickens are all fine as well.

I took the trap and food up.

rooster-red,
What do you do with the possums when you catch them. Rehome them I hope. Some people think I'm crazy when I say to rehome a "pest". Those people must be city folk because if I drive out far enough I can rehome an animal MILES from other peoples homes. I see you're in GA so you probably understand what I'm talking about.

OMG THAT IS HUGE!!!! UGLY!!!!!

I've seen thousands of possums over the years and that thing is HUGE. Where do you live?

Those dang things freak me out - hissing like they are possessed or something!

When I was a little girl I was hiding from my cousin in my grandmother's bedroom closet and all of a sudden I see two eyes "floating" next to me and hear this horrible hiss - it was a coon hanging upside down in her closet! I'm sure the neighbors a block down heard my screams!! To this day I shiver when think of those crazy things!

I'm in West GA, about a mile from a state park, so its common to have wildlife roam through here.

I don't rehome them, I let them go. Most are so scared at being caught that they don't come back.
There is one who lives just off our property and comes down to eat the cat food once or twice a week. That is the cleanest, sleekest possum you'll ever see.

I caught that big boy 1 time and he hasn't been back in 8 months or so. I scared him so bad that he quit growling and hissing and just let his mouth hang open like he was in shock:eek:

It is possible to co exist with wildlife if you want to and understand what motivates them. They don't want to hunt and kill your chickens unless they can't find an easier food source.

Now the Coyotes that come through here... lets just say they don't ever leave.(SSS)

Yikes, that is an ugly critter. My father used to eat those things back in the depression. Ugh, I can't imagine how.

With a fork usually. They're pretty good.

They also make interesting pets.

I caught one last month about that size! Rather odd way I did it too as I had baited my trap and set it on the truck tailgate to run it out to the barn late in the afternoon but then got distracted and forgot about it...

Next morning my 5 year old and I were getting in the truck to leave and he asked me, "Dad, what's that in the trap??" and without thinking I said, "Oh I forgot to take that out" and I got out to be surprised by the cage trap being sprung with this huge possum in it! Needless to say, the possum wasn't happy either as it was so big, it couldn't turn around in the trap and was almost stuck in it sideways!! It was a very fun time trying to get him unstuck when we got him to were we let him out!! My son asked if he was a angry beaver from TV....
