Hubby and I went to our Post Office today (an appointment we made on Monday) to discuss with them on how we can stop all the broken & cracked eggs we're having lately both coming and going. I really go out of my way to package my egg really well and I'm still getting reports of broken and cracked eggs. Not many but some.
I've read on here that the Post Office will not insure eggs. Well I got it from the horse's mouth today that they will insure eggs. So we'll be doing that from now on.
For eggs to be insured:
1). Eggs have to be individually well cushioned,(which we do already), paper towels in an egg carton or tissue paper in an egg carton is NOT considered to be individually well cushioned. They are NOT insurabled that way.
2). They are otherwise packed to withstand shocks encountered during normal Postal Service handling. (Packages are tossed from one conveyor belt to another. It a time crunch thing. They have to be able to withstand that shock. Normally the distance is 2-3 feet.)
3) They are not likely to be harmed by anticipated temperature changes while in Postal Service custody.
We got this directly from our Postmaster today.
I hope that this helps some people. I know that its frustrating to open a box of eggs and finding them smashed. I also know as a seller that I'm angered every single time I get a report of a broken or cracked egg.
