Post Phoenix Pics Please

They are both pullets. 3 pullets and a cockerel. They two odd colored pullets have black tops on thier heads because they are carrying a melanizer of some sort. I would guess they carry birchen.. Judging from the coloring on the young cockerel and the black heads on the two pullets. Possible they have a dose of black in them. Just my thoughts. Aubrey?

haha

Was just about to say the same exact thing Amanda.

I'm almost possitive they are carring birchen. My silver DW's from Toni do and I often get chicks very similarly colored, they all end up being or making birchens.

Good 50/50 shot at some black being in there some where too.

As for sexing, at this age, the combs are a dead give away.

As chicks, I mean just a couple weeks old chicks. The pullet always feather faster than the cockerels, at least mine do. Once they just start to feather up, you'll notice some shoot a tail on out pretty darn quick, while others still have nubby chick tails. Do to the breed, folks usually assume, longest tail...male.
But in phoenix chicks it's backwards.
Now it doesnt take long after this for the males to cath up and quickly start passing them. But in the initial change from down to feather, pullets will get a 2-4 inch tail pretty quick where the males will look just like any other chick.

After they even out, you have to go off comb.
As we have mentioned before some pullets from this breed will get cockerel feathered, pointed saddles, and even hackles and spurs, so while it works 99% of the time, from time to time it will be wrong on good phoenix lines.

Quite a few of the ones I have gotten from Toni are this way. Just got a large fowl roo from her whos whole body is pointed. Not a round feather on him. He's one of the original imports and pretty darn old, 9 years now. But we're hoping he holds on for a few more breeding seasons so I can continue working with that set of genes.

Nice, thank you. So much to learn..you guys have been great
