Got 5 Phoenix and 3 Silkie babies. Fixed those 2 raccons! Those ones wont be back!

I know that oftentimes feather growth goes through phases, and often the fast growers quit earlier. That said, it is interesting watching the differences in the chicks as they feather out. I've got one straight Phoenix BBR cockerel (not an offspring of the white roo) that looks like a freak right now compared to the other chicks. He suddenly went into a feather-growth spurt, and they are all way too big for his body at this point, making him look like an anomaly compared to the other chicks. Obviously he'll even out, but compared to where he was two weeks ago, vs now, it's the biggest jump in a chick I've seen yet. He's also got green legs, which those BBR's sometimes produced.

Here he is now:

You can see the similar 2 week progression of the other chicks (which is much more normal) I posted previously at the photo blog (so I don't clog the thread with excess photos). Scroll down past the Sumatras to see the two week update on the same chicks I posted previously.

Nice green legs on him if you want to breed to more onagadori like birds. Mandy's white line is a old line that I always liked. So him being crossed into other phoenix he should be a real looker for sure...TM

I do hope I get one nice BBR cockerel out of the chicks that are unrelated to the white rooster - maybe he'll be it. The green legs are a definite plus for breeding towards onagadori standards.

I've got some eggs in the incubator now from the hens I bought from Amanda that were fertilized by (I think) one of her other white roosters before she shipped them, so that should give me some additional bloodlines in the mix. Eager to see what will hatch from those, the first couple are due Tuesday.

I finally snagged a couple pics of the phoenix cockerels when I was in the shop today. They aren't the best because they were taken with my 2 megapixel camera phone.

This is Jeffrey the golden phoenix cock. His saddle isn't as long/full as it was, we plucked about 50 of his longest saddle feathers for some projects which were about 10-12". I do believe this spring he will be 3

The recessive white phoenix cockerel from the golden rooster and a silver hen, he is about 3 1/2- 4 months old now

When we got the flock from Myron Berger he said some whites have popped out in the past. Since we have been line breeding for awhile we get more and more whites but most are white legged and they tend to be weak. He hatched out with the proper slate legs but has some brassy color. Since we lost the white and the khaki silver pullets that were going to be bred to him we have a light brown hen that is from the same line in with him. Since they are from the same flock I expect white chicks from them
