Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I'm starting to think Bella might be keen to be a mother next year. The only hens apart from Daisy that she gets on with are the chicks. She usually doesn't share food with any hen below her (or any hen above her to be honest) but when the chicks come, she happily moved over for them to get into the feeder and shares the food with them. I wonder if chickens know who their family are...

I think Bella is doing just as an Orp should in being "nice" to the chicks. They are much smaller than she and not a threat to her in any way.

Personally I do think they know who their family is. I know people do. When I saw my grandson after not having seen him since he was in diapers, he took to me instantly and trust me, most children do not. He just instinctively knew I was family and was ok to hug and talk to. And I think chicks do too.

This beautiful rooster came from Bob Follows stock - The top breeder of orpingtons - now retired - via only one of a couple of orpington specialists. One of my bloody hens sat on the fertilized eggs.
Would love to see your flock..I bet he is going to be stunning...We would love you to write some of your knowlege on the orpingtons for us..lot of enthusiasts..lot of questions..

Well she has changed in the past week, she is a lot nicer than usual. I am kind of missing the old Bella even though i complained about her. But i am getting more hens so for their sake hopefully she will stay in nice Bella mode for a while!

Perhaps she has moved up enough in the pecking order to feel secure. Also, with age they do settle down and find it less necessary to fight.

She is above 4 hens if the chicks are included, will be 5 when i get new ones. She hasn't COMPLETLEY changed, like today when a new girls was walking past her and Daisy Bella jumped out and kept hold of her feathers until the hens pulled herself loose. She is just starting to mature for her 1st birthday. Her mother is back to her nasty self though, but she is nearly 3. There's no changing her now!

Bella's mother (still haven't come up with a name for her, so she is just Bella's mother!):
Awhh such beautiful chickens, I have a soft spot for Orpingtons. If you don't mind I have a suggestion for Bella's mother, what about Ella, its not too different so she won't think who the heck is calling.
