If my birds are not set up in breeding pens they breed with many different breeds. I just don't hatch out the eggs. My egg laying coop is a variety of breeds for egg color variety. I have a few leghorn crosses for size of egg and productivity. I do not hatch out of my egg coop unless I need to replace my egg layers.

...for my own enjoyment mainly. I want to breed a nice flock of diff varieties which r good layers and give me a nice selection of diff coloured eggs. same as yourself :) I have a French maran hen and rooster, a light sussex, a black Orpington, a bearded silkie, two frizzles and a silkie cross im not what with tho.

I am planning on pairing silkie girl and frizzle boy for breeding as i already have people wanting chicks!! letting the dark blue maran rooster with my big girls for egg laying and hatching my own eggs to increase my egg laying flock size rather than just buying POL hens from a hatchery. my goal is to breed a lovely flock of birds that lay quality eggs.

I make wedding cakes and egg quality is vital! I have a flock of ex bats that do me proud in the egg department but I now want to breed my own flock :) and advice really appreciated!! i want olive eggs and blue eggs? no ameraucanas in England or easter eggers.

I am also wanting to make charms, from my hens.... I am currently making dream catchers with the feathers I collect from the coups, frizzle feathers look lovely hanging at the bottom, white with slashes of lemon n blue, sooo sweet!! will post pics asap.

Nice pics to all who have posted. I especially like the splash girl its one of my favorite colors. I hope to get one sometime in a future breeding.

Here's my buff gang again they are approx. 5 months old. I know the cockerels do not have the best combs but from what I understand it is a much easier trait to correct than say type or color; therefore, I am hopeful for the next generation of them. Plus good quality cockerels are much easier to come by than say a nice pullet. I know many times we get hung up on small things and miss the big picture. I think I have heard it referred to as "Coop Blindness"

Here's two of the four cockerels:

This next pic gives some perspective on size. A cockerel standing next to a 3 gallon water container that is sitting on either 6' or 8' blocks.

The girls are growing up ! Have they been out in the sun a lot ? I'd like to see a bit more color in their fluff. It may be just the light though.Hard to tell much about Orp combs except for narrow, and number of points on babies. Those combs really enlarge when the girls come into lay, and the boys get mature.

Thank you. They get whatever sun hits on their lot during the day and some of the pics were taken with the sun behind them. Its hard to get a true representation of color without getting them in the proper lighting or having the skills to photoshop a pic. Between the sun & possible camera flash it washes out the color but some of the girls are lighter than others. I think it will be at least another couple of months or more before they start laying. I have never had an Orp start laying before 7 or 8 months of age.

Pretty babies Littlechicklet..Love the first 2 pics..very nice looking pullet..they look very well cared for..a treat to see.

PLEASE HELP!!!! My buff orpington pullet has tried to lay and egg, I'm not certain if this is her first or not. She left the box and continued to squat and push and when I look there was an egg hanging outside her vent attached by a moderately thick membrane. I am completely panicked and don't know what to do for her. I don't think she is egg bound because the egg is no longer inside her body it it hanging completely out of her vent. I tried soaking her in warm water and noticed no difference. Please respond!!!!!
