Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Thanks HINKJC, I am already enjoying the cool looking red look. And it is all your fault! lololol

Here is a true work in progress. I have a huge Blue breeding program (3 Blue birds). DOC a BAMMA cock is the only pure Blue male I used, his sister in with my best Black male (FERAN), and a REJECT Blue Splash from FERAN's line is with the BUS. BUS throws like a BLACK so I only get Blues from him and the splash.
I have about as many smaller younger Blues in another pen including a DOC baby Blue boy I call Leon,

Right now my Blues are definitely hit and miss. More misses then hits. BUT, with any new small number flock I would be a fool to do any culling too early. I just have only one really good producing pair. DOC is it with the top shelf Black girls. The FERAN babies are doing good. BUS's well I know who is who and I know what to do there.

L A R S is in a pen with KORgo, and he keeps L A R S and my BOSS HOGG from scrappin

P.S. I have only one couple I promised some of my Blue culls too. The Schultz's put on our Indiana Chickenstock, and that is it. NOTHING WILL LEAVE ALIVE this year.

I know someone who showed a bird as an australorp show that was a Minorca X Jersey Giant and it won the english class. To the standard it doesnt matter what made it, people will get mad if they breed pure and loose to a well crafted mutt.

Edit
I wish I could speak plain english.

I agree Kathy...
I feel it's misleading and unfair to those breeders who are breeding for pure NHRs, hens or roosters.

Yes new and different varieties are made all the time by crossing different breeds, but that's not the case with this bird.
NHR are already an established breed, why not find a nice NHR cock and show him?
Honestly what's the point of showing the mutt? To be able to say, "Ha ha! My mix bird beat your pure bred bird!" How is that relevant at all...

That just doesn't sit well with me.
I feel like this is how great lines end up polluted with bad stock.

That may be what they were to start with ..... then they are standardized (is that the right word?), where they "breed true," and then they are declared to be a breed. Anyway, that is the way I understand it.

I could sure understand that.

An APA judge encouraging entering a mutt ...... that surprises me, and ...... never mind ....

And what do you call Lavender Orpintons?
And what do you call Silver Laced Orpingtons?
And what do you call Jubilee Orpingtons?

According to you two their mutts.

Unless it is Buff, Black, Blue or White here in the USA their not Purebred by your thinking. Cause they don't meet our standards. lolol

Yes, that is correct. They don't meet the standards YET .... but they will. Soon, they will. It just takes some time.

I have simply stated my opinion, and I do not care to be in a debate with you. Maybe you can start another thread about this elsewhere ..... You may get some interesting responses.

Totally off subject, thank goodness, I notice several of you are from Illinois. I was up there this wknd for he Illini poultry show to pick up some bantam salmon favs and was very disappointed in the showing of the orps. I was hoping to see a bunch but there were just 2 in the sr. Class and 2 in the JR. Class. Was any of you there. Showing? Just curious why not more orps??

My original post that created our discussion is a worthwhile one. And is one that for people who breed project birds should be aware they MAY make a bird that can fool even an APA judge and might not be what their initially after.
I LOVE all those other varieties. That is why with pride I asked Doug Akers IF he thought it would be okay to show him as a Red Orpington. That is when he made the reccommendation of showing him as a New Hamp. I then asked him again, I was not sure IF he would be DQ'd cause of the white skin. He sent me that pic plus 3 others. Pretty convinced I can show him as a New hampshire. OR he said I can still show him as Red Orp in AOV (All other variety).
Here we have only 4 purebred standard varieties, and we sure can use more interest in our standards. However for us who like the other colors and make a nice bird go and pay the $3 and find out from an APA judge. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. And Pumpkinhead can have some fun living a longer life.
I am sorry BUFBEAUY IF I upset you by defending myself and the reason for project Orps. this will be my last on this line of thought.
So back to real Orps lololol
Unfortunately many who have Orps do not show. the time of the year MAY also have alot to do with the poor orp attendance. molting and fall breeding slows alot of us down. I'll be at Lebanon IN with a bunch. Come on out and say hey.

I took one of my blue cockerels to our county fair, and he took grand champion and also a trophy for best rooster (out of all breeds), it was only a county fair, but still my first time showing so I'm pretty jazzed about that! I'm very pleased and wanted to share
