hijacking here for a sec.... I have only hatched one set of fuzzybutts in my bator but I wanted to know if my cleaning technique is acceptable...this is what I did (a 1588 genesis)

I took clorox clean up and sprayed the entire styrofoam portion down completely and wiped with a sponge...then I rinsed with very hot water and then cold...I let it air dry. All the parts with the motor and such I sponged cleaned with a wet sponge and the clorox cleanup then with a clean wet sponge and let it air dry. The turner and everything got that treatment.

Is that enough to not only clean it, which it did but also disinfect it thoroughly?

At a certain point, it's time to toss out the styrobator, if it can no longer be cleaned. You could spread ecoli to the chicks in a filthy bator. And the styrobators are bad for getting grime in the tiny indentations, so they aren't meant to last forever. It's relatively easy to get parts for them.

I clean mine with hot soapy (Dawn dishwashing liquid) water. I have a soft toothbrush that I gentley scrub any stains with until they're gone. Then I rinse it well and spray it with a clorox water mix. Let it set for a bit and then rinse it again with hot water and let air dry. The top part I take apart every once in a while to clean , but most of the time I wipe it down with the hot soapy water and then wipe it down with hot water and let it air dry.

As this is an Orp thread, I shall show the orps I hatched in mine...

Me, too, Katy. I've hatched many batches of chicks in my Hovabator and never had an issue. We use strong bleach, a toothbrush, scalding hot water and sunshine-drying. Works well, but when it no longer cleans well, I'll replace the bottom or just get a different bator.

<---lucky because I have Speckledhen on speed dial and was neurotic about asking "Is this enough?" "Should I do ...?" "What does this mean?"

lololol It is one of two of my three day incubators. I ;ove the 4 inch by 3 inch hole on the bottom eaten away by some of my last years juvies when they got out of the brooder. They had a field day. lolol I just stuffed the hole with some bubble wrap. I promise to clean it tonite. I have eggs from the 25th going in it. lololol Surprisingly I have only lost one chick outta about 75 hatched out this year. Their all in various cages or pens growin out.

I cleaned it. It is like an ole dog. Doesn't look purdy, but gets the job done. Someday I'll put it to sleep permanantly. lololol
