Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I'm not trying to be "smart" or anything, though this is going to sound that way. The difference is, we want purebred birds of a certain color or lineage rather than just whatever we can easily get. You can still get common layers at the feed store here for $3.50 a chick and let them breed each other just like our grandparents did.

The difference is some people raise birds for the joy of it, some people do it for food, some people do it both, and some do it for pure profit.
In the long run, it is short lived though- you'll have to keep bringing in new things you can charge high prices for to maintain the boat loads of cash you make when they are first released. If I am not wrong, the more importing you do, the cheaper it gets.

All very true. And I wasn't at all clear what I meant. The people in the depression used whatever breed they could easily get, and we're still free to do that same thing.

Nobody is "mad" about anybody's prices.
But this is what gets me- why is it OK to say "I raise chickens to butcher" , but god forbid anybody admit "I import chickens for profit" ?

Do they feel like they're doing something wrong?
Why are other people always assuming you are insulting the importers because you say the birds are expensive? They ARE expensive.

I have to agree with this. If you can't make a profit, why exactly would you have the business in the first place? Isn't that the point of starting a business?

I know that no one here said the cost was unjustified. I was only making my own view clear.

Thanks!

Hi guys! I have some Lav. Orps in the incubator right now, and I currently have a Buff Orp roo. If I breed the Lavs to the Buff, what will I get? I'm so new to this chicken genetics stuff!

Thanks!

You get all black splits that carry the lav gene. They may have some gold leakage. I hatched a chick from a lav x buff mating and it had some gold patterning in it wings as a chick. Unfortunately I lost it. I wouldn't recommend using the buff if you want to continue with a lavender project.

Oy agreed, Buff has so many often unknown genes in there that you'll get a mess. Which is fine if you just want chickens and like surprises as far as color is concerned but a real mess if you want to breed lavenders.
