Or the best quality... IMO.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. Thought maybe I was just being too persnickety.

I find it interesting that Greenfire moves from breed to breed instead of improving the ones they've already imported. I am grateful they are bringing in some rare breeds that we would not otherwise have and perhaps it is up to us to improve upon them.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a following of people buying whatever GF has to offer and breeding whatever they get instead of selection the best quality birds and considering the rest pets. There are breeders who genuinely would like to improve upon some of these rare breeds but can't because there are no standards to breed toward.

IMHO Greenfire should find the standards of the birds they import so we know the actual quality of the ones being imported and can work on the standard of perfection from there. It may be that many of the birds that are being imported do not have a written standards which is going to make things messy. Too many people are breeding these trendy breeds without guidelines and who knows what these breeds will look like in a few generations.

Oh I have seen some of the birds- very nic. Great advertising. It just strikes me as more of a capitalist venture than an actual "farm". Farms don't just pop up out of nowhere with $200 and up chicks.  If they didn't expect to make a profit they wouldn't be doing it.
Anybody remember hearing about people that kept chickens during the depression so they could make a little "egg money"? How different it is this time around.

I'm not trying to be "smart" or anything, though this is going to sound that way. The difference is, we want purebred birds of a certain color or lineage rather than just whatever we can easily get. You can still get common layers at the feed store here for $3.50 a chick and let them breed each other just like our grandparents did.

I'd consider that not the fault of the source. I agree that plenty are doing that, especially with lavenders. But there are plenty that are improving lavenders as well, and I know of at least three that frequent this board that are actively doing just that. As for how any private enterprise conducts their business I can't comment because that is their business and not mine, but like you, I am very grateful that they are bringing them in. I'm not the least bit mad at their prices.

Very true. Most want to have a fancy color and do not make any attempt to better the type. It is like the old saying when selling a car, just give it a fresh paint job and it will sell. Forget how well built it is.
