I would have them also - he and his girls are fantastic looking. You are a very special person to do something so wonderful.

Those are very kind words to say. These babies have out produced my number one quality pen's girls 2 to one. The boy I gave away is doing well. She just wrote and said how nice he is to her little girl. It is a pleasure sharing nice birds with people who appreciate a decent Orp.

I just found this thread,I have four baby buffs 8 days old and four 2 month olds, someone told me today that they are not good egg layers please tell me its not true.I have golden comets, black sexlinks and `ee`s and silkies,I was going to have all buffs but I need to hear form peaple who have them.

Hi. I'm in CA and Orpingtons are my chicken first love

We were without any for a few years and I just got some buffs (hatchery stock, blush). I have blues ordered from Sand Hill. I hope the blues are as sweet as the buffs. I also have a cross bred 5 wk old chick (cockrel?) with legs so yellow they are almost orange. I'm going to try to figure out what else is in him. I was going to cull him, but his personality is too awesome, so he'll probably stay as a pet with production stock. When it's not snowing (if it ever stops) I'll try to get a pic. So glad to find you all.

all orps should lay well for you, doesnt matter if there exhibition or hatchery stock. Orps are not the best layers in the world but will provide plenty of eggs..

Hello, from the other thread newbie

In my experience buff orps are good egg layers and mothers. Just because they are classified as a meat breed doesn't mean they aren't good layers too. I've only ever had hatchery stock though.

Lildinkem, I PM'd you. I don't know that I could tell a decent orp from a poor one, but I'm hoping that maybe you can help me anyway.

I am really appreciating all the lovely pictures in this thread so far though. I'm still trying to figure out what breeds I want and so far Orps are pretty high on my list. I've heard almost nothing but good things about their personalities and I'm enjoying learning about all of the colors and projects there are with this breed.
