How does she look, in terms of Orp standard to you? It's reassuring you telling me she's actually a she, I feel like out of anyone to know these birds, you're probably the one to ask!

It's not true. At least not from what I've heard. In fact, one of the reasons I'm interested in orps is that they are good egg layers. Maybe not as good as sexlinks (maybe better, I really have no experience to base this off of) but they certainly aren't slouches either. From what I've heard, they do tend a little more towards broodiness, which might make some people think that they aren't "good" egg layers (since a broody hen doesn't lay while she's sitting on a nest or raising chicks). But I've also heard that they lay fairly well even in cold winter weather.

Lildinkem, I PM'd you. I don't know that I could tell a decent orp from a poor one, but I'm hoping that maybe you can help me anyway.

I am really appreciating all the lovely pictures in this thread so far though. I'm still trying to figure out what breeds I want and so far Orps are pretty high on my list. I've heard almost nothing but good things about their personalities and I'm enjoying learning about all of the colors and projects there are with this breed.

Hey Gabe, I just PM'd back. Not as easy as one would think to know all that goes into making good quality Buffs. I was very happy to show JeRONimo's new mommy virtually no white shafting in the wing feathers and he looked nicer, to me the day he left, then any time before. Despite the bigtime givers away regrets,, I have reloaded on the RON line with about 8 young men from Jerry and his sis's. 2 or 3 are just now looking decent in type. But I truelly am rolling the dice by letting him go. I physically do not need 4 Buff Orp cocks. Placed a very nice young Buff last week to another wonderfully nice lady that was 1/2 AKERS and 1/2 Vermazen. He was a bit too small, and I have Tonka and Thurston. About $250 invested into those two. Still yet to hatch out from Hank, Jerry's half bro. Alot of moving nice Buffs to other folks to play with here.

Here's a side shot of the Lavender Orpington chick in question, does this picture help you confirm if it's a pullet or cockerel?

It depends on the lines. I bought some purebred Exhibiton Buffs and bred them to a more production oriented buff. The offspring out lay their parent 2 to one. Some Buff Orp breeders focus on more fluff in their birds, which seems to negate egg production. On the other hand most Hatchery's priorities is producing a chicken that may resemble an Orp but is bred for egg production. Not a very big or fluffy lookin bird, BUT they do lay more then the Exhibition Orps.

The amount of fluff a hen has doesn't have anything to do with how many eggs she's going to lay. It can interfere with how many of those eggs are fertile, but not how many she lays.

Question- 1 week old chicks I hatched....

Black, lavender & black/split chicks are sprouting some white wing feathers? Aren't they supposed to be all black or all lavender
