She looks to be a golden sexlink/Orp cross. I bet she is a great mother. Is her egg color brown or light tan? I have a sex links as well. I sell lots of eggs.

This is I assume a hatchery cross. I got her from a neighbor about 5 years ago. She said she was pure Orpington, but I do not think it is possible. I adore her. She is a wonderful mother and lays nice size eggs.

Hmm that kind sounds like an EE cross. Who knows as long as she is a good Mother. I'd keeper just on that fact alone. I have some hens that I have rescued When we had all the bad fires people brought me birds and eggs from all over Texas. Needless to say my Hova bators at the time were a hummiing with eggs. I hatched everything from chickens to wild cranes.

My Wild ducks I hatched are still here, they give me a heart attack. I'll look up and they will be way up there 100. I'm afraid someone is gonna shot them. I start calling them and they fly down to me and quack and land beside me. I keep telling them they are gonna be someones dinner one of these day.

What matters is you like them. Most of us started with Hatchery birds. I have seen nice birds from hatchery as well. Go ahead and post ur babies I'd like to see them. VIVI

Thank you Vivi, I would like to start breeding and showing the Buff Orps, i do just love the color. These three older ones are survivors of a dog attack. I actually thought the roo was dead, on his back, feet in the air. Then while checking other birds for survivors he moved and made some noise. They got him on his back up under his right wing. I could see his ribs in some spots. He also limped a lot at first, but now it's not very noticable. I will show him first and do the two girls when I get the pics edited.

I bought him last March and he was big then, but not crowing yet. I"m not sure how old he really is, but probably pushing a year.


He is beginning to fill out more now, but I'm thinking he should still be bigger and rounder in the chest. His feathers have not all grown in since the dog attack so his light underfluff really shows up. Also he has some smutty brown in his tail.



I tried to get a full on tail shot but he wouldn't turn completly around for me.



I have a young trio growing out, only a couple months old right now. So I am trying to decide what to do with these guys. I've been thinking about maybe hatching some from them then breeding the girls to the younger roo, which I think is going to be a little rounder but lighter colored than this one. I'll post the girls in a bit.

I could really use some comments on him, I am trying to learn the SOP but it is hard to translate the words into what I am seeing in front of me. Beleive me you will not hurt my feelings and I won't be offended if you say they are junk. But it would help me greatly if you can tell me WHY.

He is quite nice looking for a hatchery roo ! Yes, he needs more chest , and probably more size, but he has a pleasant head and comb.Weigh him if you can. By the length of his spurs I'd say he is coming 2 this spring. His hackle, saddle, and wing bows are the color you want. I'd like to see deeper color on the bottom half of him.A little pepper in the tail doesn't bother me so much, as it's easy to breed out.

Honestly I don't show, but I do think he is pretty, I breed what I like. Don Chandler is mentor to me, and great at helping person with a kind touch and knowledge information. He will be on later I'm sure. I always say breed what you like as close to the standard as you can get, But as you see my birds are not perfect by no means. What matters is You like them.

Here is the first hen; I might have to go out and take more pics of the other one; not all of them are very good. I bought four hatchery pullets last April. The dogs got the other two, which of course were bigger, rounder and darker than these two.

the dogs got this girl right in front of her tail and her feathers haven't all grown back yet, so a lot of her fluff is showing. As you can see she is a very ligtht color, almost the color of the straw in the pen.






You can also see how her body feathering is a lot lighter than her hackles; I'm thinking they should be more nearly the same color?

Again, I am trying hard to learn the SOP and could use some critique, you will not hurt my feelings by pointing out what's wrong with these guys; I am here to learn. I am trying to make an intelligent decision, should I eat that roo and toss these girls in the EE pen and wait for my young trio to grow up? Or hatch out a few and see if anything good comes?

Thank you, I will try and weigh him soon; I"ve been thinking I need to do that and the girls too. I'm glad to hear that at least some parts of him are the right color. Yes a big difference in color in the top and bottom halves!
