Nice looking blk rooster.

Everybody uses the old plastic bubket to guage the size ..they get to be very big birds..Mine are as big as the english inports..here are a few pics , one of a 4 1/2 month old next to a bucket and another of him with english blue.

For Jaja:

Yes those buckets are great to visualize the size of a bird in a picture! But really weight is what you go by when evaluating your birds. Were I you, I'd invest in the Standard of Perfection (SOP) published and sold by the American Poultry Association (APA). It's not a bargain basement book but it's worth every penny and is available on their website.

If your birds are English rather than American, most of the very same things still apply as their standard is almost exactly the same except for feathering. The big thing is, a lot of American flocks have lost size. They've been slimmed down to be more "utility." When you hear that they are being bred for "utility" that means eggs. It means they want more eggs for less food. Which to me isn't "utility" but rather "for laying." But to each his own

Far as weight goes, they do and will fluctuate. Harry told me his 13 lbs White Orp cock lost 2 or 3 lbs this past winter, and then he put it right back on. Type is prolly the #1 trait to worry over. Males in breeding pens will let their hens eat first IF their true gentlmen. Some, like the Buff Sport I have are not gentlemen. He pecks at his girls heads if they try to eat while he eats. Most of my males are good with their girls.
Decided to put this Lemon/Blue cockerel into a pen with a few girls. He is Blotto's full brother. This guy like his brother likes to throw his food all over. Too short in the back. Too small a head. I have no intention on raising Lemon/Blues. Just needed a place to put him till I decide IF I want to sell him on Rare Breeds or just get him a home who likes this look.
These Blue girls are going to get culled. I have some other Blue pullets from Feran over the Bamma Splash hen in with his daddy Harold the Brown/Red who I may move in with him. Just another variety you just do not see around in the Orp world. At least not on BYC or in these kneck of the woods.
