I forgot to say I have a "just wait and see" pen of Blacks. I am slowly moving out the pullets that i know will not be worth using. Collected 2 eggs from Yosemite's pen. One egg from Yosemite's daddy "Harold's" pen and one egg from Yosemite's brother's pen.
Like I said a bird can and do just flop over dead for no apparent reason. Nice to have some backup just incase. I even have a 5th pen with "LiL Sprout" a late August hatch.
Some Australorps and Orp girls are in this pen and soon to be a few more Orp girls.
Definitely a Harold son

last year I couldnt get a fertile egg out of My favorite black hen..this year fannys got trimmed..not taking her anywhere..so trimmed so I dont have to keep plucking LOL..the others got plucked..Im hoping finnaly we get some babys out of her..I think she was very selective in her choices...The big problem here is catching that egg befor it freezes..it is again a wind chill warning day so everybody inside again.so Im sure that doesnt help things....But finnally this weekend its supposed to get up to 50..WHEW! We are so ready for spring!!!

I just love the blk orps..such sweet tempered birds easy to be around and handle..but Heavy to pick up..The roosters want to be lap dogs..had one that would jump up in peoples lap and fall asleep but he was really too heavy to be a lap dog..The construction workers would be taking a break in the lawn chairs and that rooster would be one of the guys and either on somones sholder like an oversize parrot or sleeping in somones lap..I have a feeling he got a little guiness stout too..... ..The females are so easy to do anything with..Love them..they will forever be a favorite here..the construction workers LOVE them..They run like a pack of dogs to meet them ..soak all of the attention in..one of the construction guys couldnt take not being greeted at the fence due to snow , so he took the 4 wheel in and plowed a path up to where they are working..I have to get a pic of that when it warms up..

According to the old books, not the greatest table bird, take on a not so pleasant grey cast when dressed, not a great egg layer compared to cherry eggers or australorp..but they make up for it in comic releif and personality..

Love the black orps..I will always keep them around..
