Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Looking forward to this season.

Some of the Black girls I like.

This girl is in Black pen #2 with Yosemite.

These hens with this type of tail with Yosemite can make some nice birds

Yosemite's tail is not perfect.
You have to use what you got.

Harold is what I got. I will be using him this season and calling this pen my #2 & 1/2 Black pen.
What ever daughters he has will be all Black. They will carry the Brown/Red gene BUT they visually will be BLACK. With Harold's type added. Hope to have some nice big Blacks.
Basically a great posibility to make a few show worthy Black pullets.

Just a wide girl. Who knows what can come out using her to Harold.
She is just over 9 months old.

Last few days this Splash will be in Feran's pen. I have a couple of pullet that I may put in with him. These Black hens are going of 5 years old. This is why you want to get from a quality Orp breeder. Hen on the far left could very well be the 9 th old Black pullet's mom.

Two 5 year old Black hens one 4 year old Black hen and a 3 year old Bama Splash hen.

You have a very remarkable Flock. I love seeing older hens that have their full body type grown in to clearly see what traits are goung into the next generation. This is breeding at its best! Great Job raising those beautiful birds!

Thank you .
I was very lucky to make the call when I did to get the 3 Blacks 4 years ago. I have received a 4th Black from the same breeder along with these hens. She was the best of the lot. She passed last summer when the heat went above 105 degrees. No longer can I call these Blacks anyone else's line but mine. Once you have culled and set up breeding pens they become your line unless the original breeder of the line tells you who to keep and who to breed to whom. The decisions I made not too many other Orps breeders would make. But that I why it is a fun hobby. You learn from mistakes and knowledge gained from your decisions.

I sure like that splash hen. :)

I hatched near 2 dozen from the Splash and Feran last year. There is one pullet from that has a wider rear end. Most are layers quality. I want to move in 2 Black pullets. Maybe this one. He is a true Black, his mother was a Milkey hen I call LahFawnDa, his daddy was a cock I got from the Sec. of the UOC 4 years ago.
So, this is a nice rounded front end pullet for Feran. Feran is 4 yrs old. He is just as interested in the girls now as ever. That will soon change. Within a year or two.
The tail is not her stregnth, nor is it for Feran. But, size is still unfortunately a trait of importance. So, I run her in with Harold the brown/Red for 2 months then in May she goes in with Feran.

Does anyone have heritage orps and hatchery orps? If so, could you please post pics of both? I would like to see if hatchery orps are like heritage or truebred orps. Thank you!

I believe that Jim Hall posted the 2 a while back on this thread. The primary difference in hatchery Orps and breeder Orps is size , even coloring, and type. The hatchery Orps show some Leghorn blood that was added to increase production, resulting in a much smaller streamlined bird. There is also a huge difference in temperament. The SOP/ Heritage Orpsre jolly souls; the hatchery Orps, particularly males, not so much.

Very pretty birds. Enjoyed looking at your photos. I have a splash baby chick, and hope that she ends up looking like your beautiful splash.

Thank you Osuman, for posting this photo which is a great help for the novice like myself to learn the conformation difference, and my! what a difference it is...

last year I couldnt get a fertile egg out of My favorite black hen..this year fannys got trimmed..not taking her anywhere..so trimmed so I dont have to keep plucking LOL..the others got plucked..Im hoping finnaly we get some babys out of her..I think she was very selective in her choices...The big problem here is catching that egg befor it freezes..it is again a wind chill warning day so everybody inside again.so Im sure that doesnt help things....But finnally this weekend its supposed to get up to 50..WHEW! We are so ready for spring!!!

I just love the blk orps..such sweet tempered birds easy to be around and handle..but Heavy to pick up..The roosters want to be lap dogs..had one that would jump up in peoples lap and fall asleep but he was really too heavy to be a lap dog..The construction workers would be taking a break in the lawn chairs and that rooster would be one of the guys and either on somones sholder like an oversize parrot or sleeping in somones lap..I have a feeling he got a little guiness stout too..... ..The females are so easy to do anything with..Love them..they will forever be a favorite here..the construction workers LOVE them..They run like a pack of dogs to meet them ..soak all of the attention in..one of the construction guys couldnt take not being greeted at the fence due to snow , so he took the 4 wheel in and plowed a path up to where they are working..I have to get a pic of that when it warms up..

According to the old books, not the greatest table bird, take on a not so pleasant grey cast when dressed, not a great egg layer compared to cherry eggers or australorp..but they make up for it in comic releif and personality..

Love the black orps..I will always keep them around..
