A new line of PURE blacks would be nice. We just had this discussion in regard to blacks from blue and chocolate breeding. I question if we need a new line that will throw mixed up colors in it's gene pool. A little predictability is a nice thing. Not everyone wants a science experiment.

Then you are saying that Alan and Harry are breeding their birds wrong and they need to do what you say? Alan has only bred Orps for well over 40 years. Alan will not show a bird unless he thinks that bird will win the Show as Grand Champion. This is what he told me. I just rather listen to someone who has a proven track record. And for sure I am not the only one who listens to Alan or there would not be so many folks wanting his birds, or worse yet using his name telling people their birds are from Alan's bloodline when their not.

What I am saying is I rather listen to Doug Akers, who wins shows that have more then 2,000 birds entered. And not just once but multiple times a year. Year in and year out his birds win. Who is a licensed APA judge. Who has birds that have wider heads, longer backs, not too fluffy, perfect color, excellent type. This is a public forum where we can exchange ideas and knowledge. Anyone who wants to breed their birds the way you suggest can do so. I am just letting you know do not expect to beat Doug, Alan, Bill, Fred at these large shows. Harry told me last nite it is alot easier to breed a bird down in size then up in size.
In this pic the reason I took it on my floor model freezer is to give some comparison for size. IF I took the pic of the bird by itself you could say a bird is huge until you put it next to something where people can tell that is one big honking bird. Or in this case you can see this bird starts at one end of the freezer and ends at the other side of the freezer.

Then why do 16 lbs Orps win shows? I never seen a judge carrying around a set of scales.

Alan and Harry have very nice OLD lines of Orps.

Because judges are ignoring the over weight DQ. Why not get rid of it if it is being ignored ? Then we can get to work on breeding "Big Bird".

I dont think anyone is aspiring to go out and beat doug acres or anyone else. Most people just want nice birds , most goals are to do a little better every year..or plan to do better as you go learning along the way..then go to shows and have a great time..that is my goal..who I beat means absolutly nothing what so ever to me..its how I am doing personally and how can I better that....

Doug is a man who minds his own bizness, does very well because he minds his own bizness ....and he spends his time focused on his birds and not on trolling on web sites..I highly recomend his approach...I also dont think its very proffessional to try to pit doug acres who is a very nice person and very generous against others....Most people like go to shows, meet other poultry people and have a good time..because that is what its all about..then again..you never know..there are a lot of really super birds sitting in areas by people who just keep quiet, breed thier birds and suprise a lot of people when they do show up..I think we should represent the orp group as promotion tool not trolling and pitting people who dont really want to be dragged into petty discussions tool..Im sure he would rather spend his time lining up his breeding pens ..if you want to follow his lead..then do what he does..do you see him in here ? I dont either..if you approach his focus on important things and not what somone else is doing and you will win too......

I have a lot to learn and need a lot of help..some people are very generous and help others some people are much more interested in trolling and fighting than proper focus..Im going to show..Im going to have the birds I want.that may bother some people but oh well...Would I like advise? you bet I would..because I am not sure about some things..but when you feel like people are trying to stomp you down or chase you out..then how does that benifit orps? this is exactly why some of them are on endangered list and near extinction to the point where breeds that were never in the formula had to be added just to save them....

I remember you saying you Monty was 12 lbs at 6 months. You seemed to have no problem then with him being over the SOP recommended size. Why is it okay for you to breed your birds bigger, but for the rest of us we have to listen to you and breed them rite at 10 lbs. Please tell us that you are breeding your Buffs smaller then their inherit weight.

Monty was actually 14 lbs at 8 mos. I am asking WHY the judges are not judging according to the SOP. If there is this sort of a flagrant disregard for the SOP, it needs to be changed , or the judges forced to adher to it. You can't have it both ways if you say you are breeding to the SOP.

I did not write the SOP. I am not an APA judge. But I do listen to them (Doug Akers) when they give advice to little kids at a table at a 2,200 bird show when there are other very well respected breeders also listening as he says to
"BREED THEM AS BIG AS YOU CAN MAKE THEM"

Taken out of context, knowing that most kids have started with hatchery birds, that was probably good advice.

I am someone who likes to think on a given weekend I can have a bird that beats Doug. Rarely it happens. BUT, I have done it once. He is one of my mentors. He gave me a very nice Buff pullet for FREE because he trusts me. Knows I am not self promoting and trying to make a buck off his line. I have not sold a Buff in well over a year.
Many folks would not share the info Doug gives out at shows on these websites, for those folks who can not attend, so they can read and learn.
