Yes! I will follow your valuable suggestions, thank you very much!! This morning, I bought the Goat Wormer and will administer tomorrow morning. When do I repeat the treatment? What kind of bird seed should I buy? Parrot, Finch, or Wild bird? I have been giving them greens without chopping, and they eat some and the rest gets all over the cage; what a mess they make! Never thought of chopping, and perhaps it will make it easier for them to eat, and will not be such a chaos in the cage.Keep those babies on Medicated chick starter, with some soaked rolled oats, and bird seed, until they are 4 mos. old. No losses that way .Start giving them lots of chopped up dark greens too. They should not need heat at 8 weeks unless the temps plummet. Put them in the garage with a light.
That's a very good weight. Have you wormed them ? Try Safeguard Liquid Goat Wormer 10%. I teaspoon to 1 gallon of water for 3 days.Shake med. well, and make fresh every day for 3 days.
Chick gazing is my favorite pastime too...when I have time !
Take a look at AVECA's chicks from me. They have been out almost every day in the snow in NY. They are in superlative condition, as mentioned by 2 judges. Then please look at JOHNN's Orps, functioning very well out ranging since chicks in an English winter. Orps are made for this .This is where good , dense, but not over long feathering, enters the picture. Why of course you can't Don. That is why most of the intelligent old time breeders stop hatching after June. I was stupid enough to continue to hatch and raise chicks up to August last year. And guess what? Those birds are noticeably smaller then their brothers and sisters who were hatched in the Spring and early summer months when they finally were full grown. Doug has mini barns and a nice size green house (which lets in the sunlite) where he has heat lamps in them to raise in the early months. When it is nice sunny and warm he can let them out. But, for the most part with the weather we're having they stay in those mini barns until it gets warmer. MAYBE down south you can get away with that. But 1/2 the country you most defintely should not even think of such a way to raise young birds.
I feed a mix of soaked rolled oats, BOSS, Wild bird seed, and some scratch, mixed with Calf Manna. This is soaked for 12 hours, with water added just over the top of the mix.. Then add some Med. Chick Starter, or Flockraiser, depending on age, just before feeding. Watch the reaction ! My babies get soaked rolled oats at 1 week old too, with Calf Manna added. This develops their digestive systems needed for good growth. PM me for details.Yes! I will follow your valuable suggestions, thank you very much!! I don't know what Calf Manna is. How do I administer it to my chicks? Would it be good for my adults as well?
I am preparing the garage, and everybody will be out this weekend.
We live in, N.California, about an hour north of, San Francisco. We don't get snow but, during winter heat it can get quite cold.

Hope to see you both at Knoxville, or Columbus so we can compare size and condition !I just got an email from my buddy who has the best White Orps around. We both say go for it. Put them out in the cold. hahaha

Knoxville? Didn't we already talk about this? You thought the Orp Natls were this year. And you was asking for folks to join ya. I will be in Connorsville IN at the show here on first week of Dec. I will be very happy to show at Columbus with my three 5 year old Black hens and two 4 year old Black hens. Then we can compare size, type and condition. Then you can see what a good APA Orp looks like. It will be a pleasure to see 14 lbs Monty at that show. Have you or your friend had any luck getting any APA Buffs with the good combs? I heard you gals were asking around.
Jon this Cuckoo is from a Black pullet and that Shafer Cuckoo cock I had last season. I hatched out 6 or 8 Cuckoos. 3 were boys 4 or 5 were girls. I only kept one huge Cuckoo girl and her smaller sister that was a mid August hatch. I have this boy going to 2 of my Buff Columbian pullets.
