Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I am quite surprised as to how fast they are growing. What is the normal weight for the Orpingtons? At what age are they considered adults? At the moment, all of them are out of proportion with disheveled looking feathers. Also, they look like wearing badly made, shabby pantaloons..They look adorable to me but, my husband and friends think they are quite whimsical.
What is a feather storm?
The feather storm happens when the Orp babies start molting all their baby feathers out to grow in their adult feathers, at about 4 months old. I've picked up a 5 gallon bucket on occasion every morning for a week with a bunch of 12 babies all changing feathers at the same time.

The English BBS babies tend to have long, drippy skirts, that I don't have to contend with on my Buffs. I've bred mine to tighten up those skirts by using birds wide shorter , wider feathers.

Orps aren't really mature until they are 2, but they should have reached full size by the time they lay. My pullets are continuing to put on body mass at 6 months, having started laying at 5 months old. They are very big girls already, and larger than their mothers, who weigh between 9 1/2 and 10 lbs. at a year. I have an early maturing line though. Some Orps don't lay until 8-10 months old.

My kids are growing up :) Our area has not had a chance to recover from winter... but it was such a nice weather yesterday here in NH... I decided to get the camera out anyway. :) Just a few of the kids.

I hope to be able to do right by the ones I have.

Aveca- excellent statements. Its always nice to have someone extending their knowledge to help. I really appreciated it when Don came to look at mine. Maybe I will be able to get him back down here before he heads back to OK.

Thank you Avec.... It is so nice when you can find someone that will/can help you learn new things :)

It really is Renie..everyone tries to make me somehow afraid of these english..but I learned they are so valuable the combs and color are so good..most interesting conversation.. its a gift really in the right hands..he told me dont be in a hurry about anything be patient ..hold back on showing some dont ever feel rushed over doing whats right..that I need to focus on the right choices, the shows just validate that your going the right way..I am so happy he found the time to help me out...plus so much more but wont bore you all....im not planning on setting the world on fire, just planning on having some really nice birds more than anything..

those baby buffs are a classy bunch.

Here's some pics of the buffs from Don. I think they will be 5 weeks old tomorrow. There are 10 of them and I am thinking probably 60/40 in favor of pullets. Of course, I have never had buffs or any from this cross so I could be wrong.
