Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Ooh, Lemon Blue Orps! I had considered trying this project as well. From what I know to get them to breed true you have to cross a blue with a birchen (or is it colombian?) patterned bird. Well I don't have either so I just planned on eventually penning a couple of my Buff girls with my Blues to see what colors hatch. The resulting birds would be more for yard candy than anything else.

I would love to see more pictures though!

I think cobby means chunky- please correct me if I am wrong.

Kathy, you are smart to put them in your freezer, you will feed your family through the winter, and that is a good thing. I am in love with the self sufficiency idea.

Corancher- you have some pretty birds- Big Daddy was very handsome and I am sorry you lost him.

On the size thing- if you have small, chunky hens, will a big roo help fix that as well as the other way around? I have two pretty blue girls that are almost 5 months old, but seem to have stopped growing-

Wow Kathy - you have some nice looking orps growing out there. I really like #3, #16, and #18 photos.

So sorry to hear of your loss Ann. I lost one of my oldest and beloved hens last week - I am assuming to the heat.

I have Birchen Orpingtons hens from my other project so I will know real soon what I get from crossing the Birchen to the Lemon Blue. I got my Lemon Blue Rooster from crossing the Blue to the Buff. I will say that the percentage that hatch Lemon Blue is very small.

Thanks everyone for the kind words for Big Daddy. I am not sure what happened to him. I was feeding everyone and he was in the barn and about 15 minutes later I walked by where he was and he was dead. He has been around a long time. I believe he was 6 or 7 years old. I have several of his offspring but didn't have the heart to get rid of Big Daddy.

Would anyone care to sex these two splash orps? They are approx 16 weeks old and voices are changing from peeps to clucks. No crows from them at all and our rooster allows them near him. But we still don't think they look like hens!
One's comb has always been a nice red and the other has always been pale. Their legs are much thicker than our mature splash orps.
Opinions from the orp experts?

Ann, so sorry to hear about Big Daddy.

tHc - not sure on the sex of them, but typically by 16 wks the roos combs are a bit bigger. So I would guess hens. I also find that hens are more likely to make the ducky noise than boys.

Here's some pics of my recent hatches.

Mottled and diamond jubilee project peeps:

I would like to give a special thank you to Bamachicken by way of Frogtown for producing such wonderful Orpington stock. I got these two today and have high hopes for their future, they are just beautiful and I
