Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

These Lavender Orpington projects are just that a project. All you get from a first generation thru 3 or 4 is the color if you breed Lavs to Lavs. They have a few generations til they will look Orp. You have to keep breeding back to standard of Orp thru a Black Orpington for them to get to the size and feathering of Orps. I took some of my 3 generation of lav hens and rooster and put them back on good Blacks. So does everyone else that knows these are not standard but project.

Agree with tuffoldhen. If folks aren't putting effort into them and rebreeding back to good black orps again, they really aren't orps yet. That takes several generations to get them to full orp conformation.

As for lavender plumage, some of that is due to the gene. Lavender is a mutation and can cause frailly looking feathers. Selecting the best plumage shapes, along with other breed characteristics will help with this. We are also finding the tone of the plumage color is more consistent with later breedings back to black, versus what some are seeing with the lighter and darker versions from the earlier generations.

A couple of my Orps that I bought (as chicks) from Dick Horstman. I really like the lacing on them.

That is my preference too, the dark blue. I just love that color, and the lacing.

I especially love the English "type," but am now thinking I will keep both American and English type. I just love the Orps!

NOW, to get rid of all these "reds," I have (Buckeyes, RIRs, rosecomb RIRs), to make more room!

I just wanted to get another shot of Goliath out here- he's so elusive! I can't wait until he fills out some. He's impossible to get a pic of outside because he's terrified of me- I'm never letting a broody raise a baby I want to keep again...or maybe I'll work harder at her letting me hold them.

That's a normal box fan maybe 6" behind him- the poop shelf is only 16" deep and the roost on which the fan sits is centered over it. Those are 2 y/o Buttercups behind and a 9 m/o Serama in front. I'm hoping he'll fill out nicely, even if he is leggy.

I`m new at raising orps,I have five buffs, and I think a buff rooster not sure yet.If I got the white and black orps and I have a buff rooster will the chicks be either buff or the hen color or would they be a mixture of colors?I know nothing about genetics.I love that buff color but would like some different color in the coop.Is this a rooster?
