so sorry to hear about your loss..was it predetor ? There are a lot of breeders out there to shop. there is also a united orpington club..think that is the name with a list.

I went out to take a few pictures of our blk orps yesterday in between rain showers.this is the fantastic blk orp cockeral we got from HinkJC..We are so proud of him.reserve champion English at APA show in sept..I love a great bird be in english import or a great American line..and this breeder has some top birds..every picture that I took of the pullet with him turned out a blurr..shes a fast little bunt cake..thou not so little..he actually weighs close to 15 lbs at 7 mos...we really will not turn into big breeders but will represent different breeders in the show ring...absolutly have to have some more of this wonderful line...shopping around now for others as well. we will show the north east area...in the future we will probably breed just a few for this but not as breeders..our freind Steve now calls him.."his lordship" hee hee. and the pullet the bunt cake probably because she is so round..if the sun comes out..maybe I will get some pictures of her this afternoon. They are no longer buffed and fluffed for show so not as neat , but they are out doing what he should be, out enjoying thier pasture and fruits in the orchard.. this big guy was so heavy when he was wet getting bath, i had to have my husband come help me get him out of the water..he liked the warm bath and didnt want to get out..it was like he dided and went heavan when he got his feet washed..ithought my lord, how do 4-h kids do this..mom must have to help with the orpingtons..

And Jody it will be novembers issue of poultry press not octs. the show was 1 day after the deadline for the paper , just to let you know, and if you dont get it already, I will get you a copy.

caught him just about to let off a crow.

Jeepers, thats terrible..you might want to try to find out what might have caused it....if its some kind of disease, you sure wouldnt want to affect the new ones you get..its so sad when you loose birds like that for unknown reason..your cooperative extension should be able to do free tests to determine what happened for you. most times they do it free because it can affect other farms in the area that might be a food scorce for people...Boy Im sorry. there are people in here that can help direct you to how to do that.I think in the illness section of the index. might be worth it.

Been looking all over for Orpington posts - new to BYC and chickens for that matter (since April) But fell in love with my blue orpington Roo - will be breeding him to Lavender and splash in spring. Currently have fertile eggs from him over my Buffs - but I know it isn't standard, they will still make me some great egg layers.

Also he bred an americana and California Whites - he has been with them since they were babies so we are just adding them to my egg layer flock. Spring will start to separate for breeding pure orpingtons.
But here is Blue steel - have more of him but this is it on my computer uploads as of yet.

Beth G. :

Just curious, How do you show a bird that is 50 SS and 50 Orp? Here in New England our catagories are pretty specific to breed.

The nice thing about the APA is the APA judges look at the bird and then judges the bird compared to the standard. All I have to do is pay my $3 to the show secretary and file the class, breed and vareity and then show. I will be showing a duo of Brown Reds in the AOV class. And the cockerel 1/4 Buff Orp 1/4 Speckled Sussex, and 1/2 Black Orp. Then Brown Red pullet is from a Blacks who were sired from my 1/2 Buff Orp hen and a Meyer Hatchery mutt. It is how the APA works. There is no pedigree papers required, YET, in showing in APA shows. So my girl will be shown against other New Hamps as a New Hamp. And as this years show secretary said to Doug last year about this girl's daddy, when asked, "what does that bird look like to you Ron?" Ron said "looks like a New Hampshire, and a darn good looking one too!"

Ok I see. I was just curious b/c I am working on a couple of color projects and wanted to see how you got yours in there

I guess I could do what you did

and if they laugh at me OH WELL! I guess I can handle losing 5 bucks like you said. Our cage fees have gone up and I really don't blame the show b/c the hard work that goes into setting up a show and breaking it down $3.00 a cage really doesn't cover it if ya know what I mean

The only folks who get laughed, and really is more like feeling sorry for are those 4-Hers who show hatchery birds. No one walked up to me and laughed about me showing my New Hamp. And IF they did I would point them to the Champ English of the OPEN show who was the bird I shown in my avatar.
