Eh- that thread hasn't moved in over 2 weeks. You 'd think people would be showing off all the spring babies grown out now. Splits are chickens too!

Maybe the Lavenders are falling out of favor?

No- the eggs are still selling like hotcakes, even though they have gotten cheaper. I think its just a case of too many people wanting the instant gratification of an all lavender flock, and not caring to continue improving them. There are only a handful of people that I would actually buy lav eggs/birds from if I wanted to pursue the color.

Many are advertisng "pure Lavender" and they are not quite yet even Orpingtons. We are hoping in using hens from Cecil moore's Black line that we will move forward this season. We will most likely take our "pure" lav pullets and mate them back to our older Black male. He was hatched from a Cecil Moore produced egg.

The Self Blue, as the SOP refers to the color, needs to be shown. When judges start placing them and disqualifying some, we can see just how close we are. Comparing your birds with mine at a show is the best way to see where we are in the development. We may be closer to the Standard than we think.

I just found out yesterday that a good friend of mine has a Lavender pair that carries the mottling gene!

I saw the rooster last night, he has the pink legs that indicate the gene is there, I told him he should breed the birds together and try to get some pure Mottled birds out of the cross. When that happens we will both be crossing the Mottled birds to my pure BBS English line to continue to work on type and then breed towards the English standard.

I'm very excited.

Ours have yet to start laying, so are still young with lots of growth left. Their mothers are Cecil Moore direct line hens and the sire is an F5 hinkjc male. We have the splits together and should get a few nice looking Self Blue from them. It depends on what we get and how they look before we decide to let any hatching eggs loose.

This photo was taken back in late summer.

If it was me i would go with #2... My least favorite is #3... he's off, and i really don't like the type of tail, nor how he holds it! #1 would be my back up, if it were me. but #2 seams to have possibility, i would actually like to see what he could throw in a generation or two mixed up with a nice black hen or two, then the off spring crossed to bring out the lavenders. but even still hes not bad, better orpington type then many... its the tails that flag to me... lavenders seam to have very sqirrly tails

Thanks, that's just what I'm going to do. I do have some quality eggs in the incubator now, hope to get some nice blacks that I'll use with my lavs.

Sounds like you've got a solid game plan then! I have some promising blacks that i want to breed for another season(with some blues) and i think i may try lavender male the following year. I'm just in the final stages of culling my extra roosters to get some pressure off my poor hens lol.
