Those birds have a long way to go before they even remotely resemble anything that you could call an Orpington.

You've got a long project ahead of you.

IMO.

He guys! I have some huge Buff Orps that I got from Hinck JC.....I LOVE these birds!

I need to order some leg bands, but was wondering what size you guys use on your birds.

When I had hatchery birds, I went by the guide on the website and ordered a size 12....but that looks pretty small for these great big Orps :

Thanks for your help!

Heck with the leg bands that kitten in your avatar looks awesome!!
I toe punch and do not use leg bands.

Okay... I am assuming slow feathering cockerel, but I want to make sure. 9wks.

Hackle:

Saddle:

And what is up with the barring? Is that a normal Lav thing - being a project color? My other older three don't have that.

Hey, thanks you guys! I knew the 12s seemed small! Toe punching - I'm soooo squimish - no can do! Ugh!

Thanks for the compliment on our new kitten (she is one of two - we got her brother, too). Her name is Penny (registered name: A Small Fortune) and we just love her! She helped supervise the incubator for my last batch.

I have 16s expandable ring bands on my English boys.

I am still having trouble sexing this Lav Orp I hatched at the beginning of November. The face has not gotten any pinker etc.. I was really pretty sure boy because it did get pink early but it's such a pale pink still now at almost 3 months old.. can I finally name this

pullet?

still has a bit of a cockerel look to me, iffy to be sure. take it out in the sun and back brush the feathers on the wing bows and back, you may see a couple shiny points

The kitty looks like she commands you to give her anything she wants. You work for her. Extremely intelligent looking girl! Prolly will graduate with the highest honors of her class.

Question about toe punching. I toe punched my chicks(first time doing this) when they were about a day old. No big deal, like piercing an ear, but the holes closed in! Should I wait until they are older, but then I won't remember who's who.

I found it wasn't enough to just punch a hole.... I had to actually removed the tiny piece of skin by hand to keep the hole from closing up.
