Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

Very sad news to hear of Cecil Moore's passing. His contributions to the Orpington are tremendous.

It is my understanding that the Secretary of the United Orpington Club has Orpingtons directly from Mr. Moore himself, so I feel confident that his breeding program will be scrupulously and meticulously continued.

Hello all. I hatched some BBS orp eggs last September...on the 14th. The birds are just under 5 months olf now. I wanted to share a few pictures of my favorite blue hen, Rita, and my favorite blue cockerel, Rex, to see what you all think of them. They are very gentle sweet birds. I have a few more from the same hatch, but didn't want to overwhelm you all with too many photos.

Interesting information.

This is an issue that we've been discussing on the English Orpington forum. Some people advertise their birds as being "John Doe's lines" when in reality they could have come from John Doe's line 20 years ago, and who knows what they have been bred to since. We really need to make some changes in advertising. Now if you get a bird or eggs or chicks DIRECTLY from "John Doe," that is one thing, but getting birds years later, and several breeders later, claiming that your birds are "John Doe's" really isn't accurate and can really damage a respected breeder's reputation. JMO

I was just talking about this privately about Ameraucanas. I say they Are "So and So Lined" if that is where the original stock came from but another person bred the chicks I buy. Now, my one isn't a 'lined' line. My stock came from that person's breeding pen and her eggs. So that would be "So and So's Line". I don't know if that makes a difference, but I really don't like the idea of someone's name being put on substandard birds. My "lined" birds have yellow legs and cross beaks. I doubt the original breeder would appreciate me saying they are their birds when I did not get them from them directly.

;)

Those are very nice birds Lara.

I agree with you. I think some people are name droppers, in an attempt to make money off a name.

Regarding the passing of Cecil Moore. It is surely a loss to the poultry world.
As I understand, Mr. Moore did not sell any stock from his farm in the last five years. He did, however, sell a box of black chicks and a box of white chicks to Superior Farms over twenty years ago.

Some breeders choosing to not join BYC have bought birds from famous lines and improved them. I have found that namedroppers are more exclusive to BYC than other forums especially the word "English" which is the grandaddy of all names thrown about. They are no better than American lines but only different and some English lines are imported from U.S. lines and used for improving English lines or so I am told which really throws a wrench in the works.

I have seen great birds from local breeders that have never heard of BYC. and some breeders that say they will not discuss birds here.

I have some beautiful Orps that I purchased from Hink JC. I am very, very pleased with the quality of the birds - plus an excellent temperment! I have set them up in breeding pens for this season and am really excited to breed them!

But I won't lie...if I could afford an English Orp - I'd have

I have both types and they both have unique redeeming qualities. I prefer the American orps simply because there is more toleration in that type. The English are beautiful birds but I just cannot accept the cochin look that they have attained. I would rather have a cochin and the APA is right in its distinguishment of breeds being a clear line.

I have affordable ones of good bloodlines when I am ready to offer them. (a work in progress) My theory is to make them affordable to all.
