Post Pics Of Orps/ Orpingtons HERE

I know what you mean, I have a couple JG that are laying one has a full red comb the other has no red at all and the comb still looks black/purple. The saddle feathers look rounded also but I have some lav orps that were rounded until new ones came in at about 20 weeks that were pointed. I really think some bloodlines cause this to happen and this year seems to be a rooster year.

I hatched a dozen of these last year that, at about 10 weeks, all appeared to be male from the redness. I ended up with only 2 being males. These are tough to sex!

Most here on BYC do not show their birds. Most here do not care about raising birds to the APA SOP. For those who here on BYC get all wrapped up in others business, maybe they should step back and worry about what their raising. Instead they prefer to nib into others business and act all high and mighty in telling everyone what to do with their birds.
I do show birds. I do attend seminars with 4-Hers. And BYC is NEVER mentioned as a reliable source for the little ones to safely go to for info on raising poultry. IF one wants a serious conversation about how to breed one's birds this many times has not proven to be a friendly place to ask questions or show pics of birds.

I agree with you, Bill. This site is "backyard chickens," and the majority here simply keep a flock of backyard chickens. It would seem this site could benefit from having a forum just for those interested in showing and breeding to the standard. But, thus far, there is not one here, and unless (or until) there is one here, people will continue to go elsewhere for that.

The future of showing birds is with the youth and most like myself did show them at fairs and such as kids and then never really pursued it after that until later in life. Ultimately a breeder can pretty much breed what they want but there is a responsibility that is implied to steer the youth of the chicken world in the right direction. BYC should be a place that does that. As for friendly that is something that each person has to decide before they post myself included.

Jim, what you've stated here is perfect nonsense and I say that as someone who actually has experience exhibiting at APA ABA sanctioned shows. Were I to import this marvelous UK type buff we are looking at and exhibit him on this side of the pond he is exhibited and evaluated according to the APA SOP. There is no nonsense about his not being evaluated according to the APA SOP or me providing the judging slate with a current copy of the UK SOP. That's absolutely ridiculous. I realize I seem extremely argumentative but I am always flummoxed by the fact that you state an idea and then completely contradict it. Orpingtons for new comers to an Orpington interest may find the present state of affairs confusing but I can't see how the things you post are going to help clarify anything for anyone. Just my take on what we are seeing and reading.

Splash orps have always been the most androgynous to me. One thing I found though- in certain lines you may see chicks with almost green legs. Almost every time these ended up being males. I don't have the color birds ot make splash anymore, but maybe its something another BBS breeder could look for?

The APA does not care what people raise. An APA show will use the APA Standard to judge birds in an APA show. If birds are not accepted by the APA they will be judged as a non standard breed and the judge will be just guessing if they don't have a standard for that breed, so sometimes people will provide the judge with the "standard". A non standard bird can only go as high as BV and even then it cannot compete against the other birds for a higher award. As an example until a couple years ago the Marans were not recognized by the APA. Serious breeders would sometimes provide the French Standard for judges to use. Now two Marans are recognized. (Black Copper and Wheaten).

I personally raise three non standard breeds and will probably raise some British Orps this season. I also raise what I want to raise and it is not always a standard breed. People should raise whatever birds they enjoy.
