Ok, I have a blue, splash, black/lav split & lavendar hens. Is there one colored Roo I could get to get nice babies out of them girls. I don't want to have a lot of Roos...someone good with colors please help...:/

I am not a genetic expert by no means.... But with what you have... I would probably go with a very nice typey black roo.

I agree, go with a quality SOP type Black Orpington male. Several should have some nice ones available at the fall shows. We may have a few. Depends on what we decide to keep.

I would say that is a Light Sussex, not a Columbian Orpington. The Sussex also has white shanks and is similar in type to an Orpington.

You might be right that could be a columbian Orp hen next to the black Orp hen but you know them Germans they have so many different breeds who knows.

I am very lucky to know the mentor to one of our local Master breeders. Jack has said that the traits he first looks at is broadest (that means width) head, broadest chest and broadest back.
He also says to pick out your very best hen and very best cock and breed them to the max.
I learned my lesson well. I now longer look to buy eggs. I look to buy the best available culls from these master breeders and breed the cr@p out of them.
Last year at the Greenville Ohio poultry Show I bought a Buff cock from this master breeder for $20. this cock has about the widest back I have seen available. And took that cock to my Central Indiana Poultry Show winning Champ English Buff hen from 2 years ago. And ONLY bred them for chicks for about 2 months.
Here is one of their babies. Wide head, back and chest is the goal.


I am using the same theory to build my own White Orps. Using BUFF SPORT pullets and White SINGLE Comb Wyandotte pullets to my pure bred White Orp cockerel.
These Wyandottes are from the Master Breeder who won Grand Champ at that same Greenville show last year with his outstanding cock. USE the BEST and select for the best.
