Hard to tell but they appear to be of decent quality and have good lacing. I don't think you'll have any problems breeding them to each other at least the first year. In that time you can learn more and then decide if you want to bring a different line in and from where.

They won't lay till around 7-8 months old though it's hard to predict. I've had them start at 6 months and as late as 11 months.

IF I am guessing right, you have 2 cockerels. And the one in the 2nd pic is the one I would use. IF he is in fact a he, he has better type. And just whack the one in the first pic. Only breed with your best. Then the offspring cull for:
BROADEST HEAD
BROADEST CHEST
BROADEST BACK

Hi I am new to BYC and would like to ask a few questions if I may. I just started with some blue Orpingtons. They are the American type not hatchery but I do not know how high the quality is. Would any one recommend some reading, forums or sites so I can get a better understanding of the breed. Mine are young and they do not seem to be the smartest birds but they are mostly friendly with the exception of 1 cockerel who seems more skittish than mean. My questions are fairly simple: do they mature slower than say EEs, how old when they start laying, do they roost (mine seem to sleep on the floor) and since I am not sure of the extent of the line breeding would it be wise to bring in a different line of black to hopefully add to what I have? I have a pair that is approaching 5 months & a trio that is approx. 9-10 weeks. The trio is the friendliest since I hand raised them. Below are pics from a few weeks to a month ago. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! I'd wait to see what they look like at a year old. I like the lacing on them. Orps mature slowly. Meanwhile, do you have a copy of the Standard of Perfection? You can get one from APA.Reading it ,especially the first few chapters, will help you a lot.

Thanks everyone. I do not have a copy of the Standard of Perfection. I will go look it up. I think I have 3 pullets & 2 cockerels but 1 of the young pullets is bigger darker with a larger comb but no saddle feathers. I will try to post pics later.

The pullet closest to the wall looks very different than the other one but I am almost sure its a pullet. The way it carries its tail, shape of tail, no saddle feathering but larger comb. Am I wrong?

Thank you. I do not know anything about Orpingtons but I really like the looks of the young pullet next to the wall. She may not be show quality (I guess I will learn) but so far I like everything about her but think maybe her comb is going to be big. She has a large head compared to the other pullets & the young cockerel appears to have a nice broad head & chest for his age. Time will tell. I plan on growing them all out with the exception of the older cockerel (undecided). If I find some nice blacks I will replace him and add a few black pullets to broaden my gene pool.

I only kept 3 BUSTOFF hens. One got eaten in a Racoon attack last year. The best of the lot is this 5 to 6 month ole's mommy.
Many times I was told to not use BUSTOFF. Told I would ruin my breeding program for all my Orp IF I did.
This is just one of his Grand Daughters.
