I was told you have to do it the very first day they hatched or you can't tell. The differences are very slight too. I figgured 2 hens 1 roo for mine. We will see.
I took a late lunch. Last year a buff Orp was Best of Show at the Heritage Expo.

Right now the only varieties I have that I will pursue that are not accepted by the APA are Cuckoos and Dun Birchens. Already have a very nice lady out in MS who would love to have the Dun Birchens for her Araucana project. I could just flood the market with Cuckoos too but that demand would quickly fall off since there are so many different varieties being marketed right now. So I have a small Cuckoo pen. And expect it to stay that way with feed prices going up and up. So, for now the hard to get variety I am making is White Orps. They too can go for very good money. And being accepted they will never go outta style.Well not in this economy at least. I am still planing on selling my cuckoo chicks to pay for feed, they seem to be a hard to find color so they go for a heftier price. I paid well enough for them. Chicks are around $16 a piece. Plus they are stunning to look at![]()
I tried feather sexing. It will only work, I believe, if they are bred -early feathering of one gender with slow feathering of the other gender. I was 100% sure of mine. I was wrong. But, you can breed them for this I believe. Hopefully the experienced will add information.
