My first order from Ideal was 14 Silkies, 4 white, 4 red, and 6 blue. Well, the blues seem very dark, almost black and some of them are quite small. I got them around the middle of October. The red are sturdier looking, as are the whites. I'd say the whites look the best, but I lost 1 of them a couple of weeks ago. No known reason.

The whites have the best topknots but they are not great. The reds and blues have quite a few chickens with very sparse top knots. I really would recommend you get whites if you plan to order Silkies from Ideal, Mermaid. I also like that with the whites their black skin shows up the best.

I looked at the website that shows country of origin for chickens but Mexico was not listed. Since the people who came to Mexico were from Spain, I would go with Spanish chickens, of which the site lists 6. I'd go with Minorca as it would be the easiest to get.

Mermaid, have you considered Old English Game Bantams? They come in several dozen colors and are very nice, friendly little chickens. I have 2 pullets and they are very sweet, walk up to me and are happy to be picked up. I may add a OEGB to my Ideal order, a roo so I will have fertile eggs from my 2 little pullets.

Even though I'm not thrilled to pieces with my Silkies, they are nice little birds and I'm ordering from Ideal again. I'm getting 5 each Black Crested White Polish, White Crested Blue Polish, and Buff Laced Polish. Ideal doesn't sex their Polish so I have to take straight run. Then I'm getting 3 pullets and 1 roo Russian Orloffs because they are good broody hens and good mothers. And because I really like the top hat birds, I'm ordering 3 pullets and 1 roo Cream Brabanters. Last on my order are 3 pullets and 1 roo Silver Spangled Spitzhaubens, another top knot bird.

So if you were selecting ONE Old English Game Bantam rooster, which one would you get?

Yes, there are a couple that are pretty cool. Go to www.feathersite.com and that'll show you some really nice ones.

Hey guys, i ordered a batch of chicks from ideal on saturday. It was a bunch of different things, 3 and 4 of each type i wanted. When do you think i'l get them? Are they quick about it? I'm so excited!

DH ordered some Buff and Red cochins from Ideal this past December Here is a picture of one of the reds at 14 weeks Notice the lack of leg feathering Here is also a apicture of my cochins I hatched from breeder stock at 12 weeks There certainly is a big difference in the feathering. I wont be ordering anymore from them

I have to post this since you said something about the buff and red cochins from ideal. Before I say anything bad about them, I should say some of the cochins I got from them were beautiful. BUT... the red and buffs I got from them were HORRIBLE! I can't use them in my breeding pens. I don't think they're purebred because they have black around their necks and in the tail feathers. Their tails are stiff and not very rounded. If I ordered from them again, I would never order the red and buff cochins. Here are some pics. By the way, if anyone does know what these are mixed with, please let me know.

This is one of the buff ones, at a few weeks old. Notice the markings:

Kennedyscochins: I got the same thing DH ordered the buff and red. The buffs had the black in the neck and tail The reds were more uniform in color but like you said they arent anywhere near what I was hoping for I sold all but 2 buffs but I still have the 5 reds I will wait to see what they look like when they get older but I dont hold out much hope. My cochins from the breeder are weeks younger and much more fluffier and have fuller feathered legs and feet.
